talkSPORT 2

Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st August

Tennis: Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati Masters)
Lindner Family Tennis Center, Mason, Ohio - commentary on the ATP men's singles event

The daily commentary teams on ATP World Tour Masters Tennis Live were:

Thursday (Round of 16) - Catherine Whitaker, Luke Milligan and Joe Shennan
Friday (Quarter-Finals) - Gigi Salmon, Catherine Whitaker and Rupert Bell
Saturday (Semi-Finals: Murray v Raonic & Cilic v Dimitrov) - Gigi Salmon, Catherine Whitaker and Luke Milligan
Sunday (Final: Andy Murray v Marin Cilic) - Rupert Bell and Naomi Cavaday

As per the Rogers Cup in Toronto a few weeks ago, there wasn't set presenters anchoring talkSPORT 2's Cincinnati Masters coverage, just the commentators handling the links around play. Also like the Rogers Cup, they only covered play from the final four days of action despite the event beginning the previous Saturday. Thursday's coverage went out between 4-7.10pm & 12-2am, Friday's between 4-6pm and 8-10pm, Saturday's semi-finals got underway at midnight and ran to the conclusion, with the final coverage beginning at 9.10pm immediately after their Sunday night La Liga commentary - which handily concluded just as the players were finishing their warm-up.

Thursday 18th August

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live from the KCOM Stadium

Rugby League: Super League Super 8s
Hull FC v Catalans Dragons - Mark Wilson and Michael Shenton (8pm KO, second half commentary from 9.15pm)

There was only second half commentary on this Super League match as talkSPORT 2 were broadcasting the whole of the Astra Giurgiu v West Ham United UEFA Europa League Play-Off match between 7.15pm-9.15pm.

Saturday 20th August

Jon Norman presented T20 Blast Live from Edgbaston

Cricket: T20 Blast Finals Day
Nottinghamshire v Northamptonshire (first semi-final) & Durham v Northamptonshire (final) - Andrew McKenna, Alex Tudor and Tymal Mills (11am & 7pm commentaries)

Norman and McKenna updated talkSPORT 2's Matchday Live 2 on the second semi-final - Durham v Yorkshire - during their live coverage of Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace from the Premier League and Full Time Phone-In between 2.45-6.30pm. I think Macca may have commentated on the final over(s) of that game, but am not sure.

Their coverage of the first semi-final ran between 10am-2.45pm, the match starting at 11am, with it overrunning into the Matchday Live 2 timeslot due to a few spells of rain. Coverage of the final began around 6.30pm with the match itself starting at 7pm. They took the whole of both matches uninterrupted and stayed on-air for the trophy presentation before finishing at 10.30pm. While it was a shame that other commitments meant they couldn't cover the second semi-final in full, they did a strong job when they were on-air so well done to all involved at Edgbaston on Saturday and throughout the course of the summer. Hopefully the listening figures for their T20 Blast coverage have been favourable as it has been enjoyable listen and deserves to return next summer.

Sunday 21st July

Will Gavin presented MotoGP Live

MotoGP: Czech Republic Grand Prix
Automotodrom Brno - Nick Harris, Steve Day and Matthew Birt (commentary on the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 races, as the TV international feed)

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live from the Select Security Stadium

Rugby League: Super League Super 8s
Widnes Vikings v Wakefield Trinity Wildcats - Mark Wilson and Paul Rowley (3pm commentary)

I should probably point out that this Paul Rowley is the head coach of the Toronto Wolfpack and an ex-Leigh Centurions player and coach, rather than BBC Radio Manchester's Wigan Athletic and politics correspondent.

The NFL returns to 5 Live Sports Extra on Thursday night/Friday morning with commentary on the opening match of the season between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. There's no show on Sunday due to the Paralympics and Men's US Open Final being on 5 Live and Sports Extra respectively.

Charles Dagnall takes over as host with Mike Carlson and Greg Brady due to be amongst the regular guests. Once we get to the playoffs Darren Fletcher and Rocky Bowman will commentate on the AFC Championship match and the SuperBowl.

Interesting news - thanks for posting this. I had half an eye on the prospect of talkSPORT winning NFL rights, what with them launching a dedicated NFL magazine show hosted by Nat Coombs on talkSPORT 2 and having recently announced the end of their Sunday night rugby union magazine show Full Contact, a fixture in the Sunday night NFL timeslot for many years. That that programme had been cancelled with no obvious long-term replacement pencilled in had suggested that they may be interested in these rights.

That being said, I'm happy enough that NFL coverage is continuing on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra - I'm sure that if talkSPORT had picked up rights, their coverage would have largely taken the same form 5LSE's has in previous years, with the sort of people we hear on 5 Live NFL anchoring around simulcast US radio commentaries. And with Nat having moved to talkSPORT 2, I suppose the only change of note is the appointment of Charles Dagnall as presenter. He did a few stints on 5 Live NFL as a studio pundit last season, is a keen follower of the sport and has hosted other sports on 5LSE, so should prove to be a good choice. A shame that Nat won't be involved though, as he is a very strong NFL host in my opinion.

Just on the new season thread, I'm going to continue posting details in this one for a little while yet, up until the conclusions of the ongoing 2016 Super League, Major League Baseball, MotoGP and county cricket seasons.

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live from the Halliwell Jones Stadium

Rugby League: Super League Super 8s
Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors - Mark Wilson and Andrew Henderson (8pm commentary)

This was the only non-football sporting event talkSPORT 2 had commentary on this weekend, other than Sunday's Premiership rugby union which I'm updating in the 2016/17 thread, although according to Will Gavin on Saturday's Sportsday they were due to take updates on cricket's One-Day Cup Final between Warwickshire and Surrey from Bob Platt. I didn't hear any updates from the final on either talkSPORT or talkSPORT 2 though.

No surprise that this Friday's live Super League game will be Hull FC v Warrington Wolves, the League Leader's Shield decider in the final round of Super 8s matches. The semi-finals are then the following weekend - possibly on the Thursday and Friday nights going by last year's fixtures - before the Grand Final takes place on Saturday 8th October at 6pm. Hopefully all three play-off matches will be live on talkSPORT 2.

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, BBC Local Radio and the BBC Sport website commentaries on the final round of County Championship Division One matches

Cricket: County Championship Division One
Hampshire v Durham - Kevan James, Martin Emmerson, Don Topley and Ken Maxted
Middlesex v Yorkshire - Simon Mann, Kevin Howells, Henry Moeran, Kevin Hand, Dave Townsend and Dave Callaghan
Somerset v Nottinghamshire - Anthony Gibson, Stephen Lamb and Vic Marks (BBC Somerset); Dave Bracegirdle and Lizzy Ammon (BBC Radio Nottingham)
Warwickshire v Lancashire - Clive Eakin, Scott Read and Phil Britt

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's primary commentary was Middlesex v Yorkshire, with Mann, Howells and Moeran joining BBC Radio London duo Hand and DT plus Cally representing the BBC stations in Yorkshire. For the first three days, they also took spells of commentary from BBC Local Radio in the South-West's coverage of Somerset v Nottinghamshire - for whatever reason they and Radio Nottingham provided separate online coverage as opposed to the usual joint set-up we had from BBC's WM, Coventry & Warks, Lancashire and Manchester for Warwickshire v Lancashire and Radios Solent, Newcastle and Tees for Hampshire v Durham.

I must admit I've probably missed the odd name out from the commentary teams (I'm afraid I can't hold a candle to the much-missed county cricket contributions of Connor the Judg) and I only dipped in and out of the Division One matches - all four had something riding on their outcome, while the four games from the final round of Division Two were all dead rubbers with Essex having already won the title and the only promotion place. On a general note, well done to everyone involved at BBC Radio (national and local), the counties and the ECB for their efforts in providing county cricket commentaries throughout the summer. I always enjoy what I hear when I catch their coverage, I like how different radio stations and commentary teams join together and how 5LSE make many of the biggest matches available on national radio. They do a great job and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come.

Fully agree. One small point is that David Townsend seems to have spent the last couple of years in Yorkshire rather than BBC Radio London. I spent a couple of days at Lord's last week (including the amazing climax) and was very impressed by the BBC Radio coverage (which enhanced the great last day). Long may BBC's cricket coverage flourish.

I think radio cricket coverage in this country is going from strength to strength; Test Match Special has a very strong mix of commentators and has expanded it's coverage of women's internationals in recent years, while at county level the coverage teams receive across BBC Local Radio and the BBC Sport website is public service broadcasting at its best, with the national radio relays of the biggest games being the jewel in Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's crown for me. This year, we've also had the very welcome emergence of talkSPORT 2's cricket coverage, which has carried strong radio world feed commentaries on the World Twenty20, produced their own commentaries on the Indian Premier League but perhaps most notably have provided extensive coverage of the T20 Blast, with their T20 Matchday Live show covering busy Friday nights in a distinctly different way to the BBC's national offering, making for healthy competition. So there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful about the way cricket is covered on UK radio.

Friday 30th September

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live from the DW Stadium

Rugby League: Super League Semi-Final
Wigan Warriors v Hull FC - Mark Wilson and Garry Schofield (8pm commentary)

Richard Shaw-Wright reported on Friday's semi-final for talkSPORT.

With the Super League Grand Final taking place this coming Saturday, coinciding with an international football break, the match will be broadcast live on talkSPORT rather than talkSPORT 2. Adrian Durham will host coverage at Old Trafford from 5.30pm after presenting a lower league version of Matchday Live from 1pm. This is a fairly bold call by talkSPORT, given that England are playing Malta at the same time as the Grand Final is taking place, which will be the focus of Radio 5 Live's attention and indeed talkSPORT 2 will be airing football programmes with Tom Rennie (5-7pm) and Danny Kelly (7-8pm before his show shifts to talkSPORT) at that time. But I think it's really respectable that talkSPORT are prioritising Super League's showpiece ahead of updates on a single World Cup qualifier, which previously was what I was fully expecting them to do.

If anyone is interested, I'm going to start shifting the talkSPORT stations' details of sports coverage other than rugby league into the new season thread (including sports still in the 2016 season such as Formula 1, MotoGP, golf and tennis). Just thought I'd document that on here!

Dave Rowe, a freelance speedway broadcaster who commentates for Eurosport and the international feed among others and is familiar to commercial radio listeners as a football correspondent on talkSPORT and Signal Radio in Stoke, was making his debut on BBC WM's speedway coverage this week. He is a strong addition to WM's already very good team.

Adrian Durham presented Super League Live from Old Trafford alongside Paul Cooke and Michael Shenton

Rugby League: Super League Grand Final
Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors - Mark Wilson, Michael Shenton and Paul Cooke (6pm commentary)

Great to hear commentary on the Super League Grand Final prioritised by talkSPORT after the excellent rugby league coverage talkSPORT 2 has been providing throughout the season. It was a first appearance for both Adrian Durham and Paul Cooke on their Super League coverage this year, with Adrian having co-written the former Hull FC & KR player's autobiography Judas. But it was good to hear that they weren't included at anyone else's expense, seeing that their regular presenter/commentator Mark Wilson led the commentary with Michael Shenton, who was one of their most regular co-commentators this year along with Garry Schofield and Andrew Henderson (who both got to cover a semi-final each for them).

At the end of the coverage, Adrian mentioned that Mark Wilson "will be back on Super League commentary next season on talkSPORT." So I'm glad to hear that their coverage is set to continue in 2017.

For the World Series, Kevin Winter hosted Game One - as Marc Kestecher was calling the New York Knicks @ Cleveland Cavaliers season opener in his new role as ESPN Radio's lead NBA commentator - before Kestecher picked up the reigns from Game Two to the end of the series. Chris Singleton was on the field to conduct interviews and provide pregame and postgame analysis, while Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer appeared as a guest colour commentator during the third inning of Games One and Two.
