Samsung red flashing light
I have a Samsung ue46es5500kxxu, led smart TV. 2 1/2 years old. It won't turn on, red standby light flashes 5 times then goes off, and just carries on like that. Having done some research on the Internet, this appears to be a common problem with Samsung TVs. Replacing caps on the power supply board, has been mentioned by quite a few people with the same issue that I have, so I got a new power supply board and swopped it. Still doesn't work, still doesn't turn on. Anyone got any ideas?

That's quite a new TV, I would have hoped they sorted out the caps problems long ago.
You've replaced the board, so just in case that isn't compatible and that is why it is still not working this video may or not help. Lots of them on YouTube. I sent my power board to a local TV repair guy and he did a great job at a decent price, mine's still working. Repair Tips |

Maybe it's just me - but if I had a TV which had failed when it was only a couple of years old, I wouldn't attempt a DIY repair on it - instead I'd be talking to the retailer which sold it about whether a failure should happen at this age - or the manufacturer to at least get them to cover the cost of parts (which I successfully did with a 2 year old Panasonic some years back).

There is obviously a lot to be said for free (John Lewis) or cheap (Richer Sounds) 5 year warranties. It doesn't say much for the quality of Samsung products if two posters have had the same problem in such a short time.

Following Sony stopping sets smaller than 32 inch, we've sold a few smaller Samsung sets, but I can't say they have been very reliable. |

The second poster merely commented that they'd sent a power board away for repair - not that it was for the same set or even the same manufacturer. |

Samsung knowing fitted sub-standard capacitors for years and years, I'd like to think they don't any more - but I've no evidence either way.

"but I can't say they have been very reliable" is pretty meaningless. So what sort of failure rate(s) are we talking about, over what time period, are they all for the same fault etc etc. It's a bit like saying I won't buy a Ford because they're unreliable. In my family there are 4 "small" Samsung sets, all <26", all LCD, some used as main sets some as bedroom sets, none are less than 4 years old, none have ever failed. So they're 100% reliable, no ? Now, I'm sure you'll reply with the 'that's one persons experience so is meaningless'....... but then again, so is your comment without a few facts behind it. |

Come, come, Nigel, this statement:

If it'll make you any happier, out of the ten we had three had failed within the first week - but I was trying not to post such bad results
![]() 4 out of 14 have completed at least 4 years service without a problem. That leaves 7 we don't yet know about. You're still at least 33% more likely to get a set that will do at least 4 years than one which fails immediately on those figures. As ever - there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Inevitably, you may have had a dodgy batch. Equally was it all one 'troublesome' model? You know the kind of thing - the type where for every one you sell it feels like you get 3 back - back in the day pretty much anything with an Amstrad badge seemed to feel like that

My Mum's Samsung plasma is still going, no cap problems with that one. Commercial suicide to make a product that lasts forever I guess, although it does spur them on to advance the technology and tempt us out of our cash.
My next TV will be be at least a 60 inch 4k set, but only when there's some content though. |
