At some point in the future (although possibly not til next year) I am hoping to start a new online radio show/podcast based on 90s music.

Im contemplating a feature to do with cover versions. The criteria is cover versions that were a hit in the 90s, and the originals had to be a hit prior to the 90s.

So for example, Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O' Connor wouldn't count as Prince's original was just an album track.

However, It Must Be Love by Madness was a hit in the 90s, and Labi Siffre's original was a hit in the 70s.

So theres my opening suggestion...over to you.

Oasis covered Slade's Cum on Feel the Noize, the b-side to their 1996 no.1 hit Don't Look Back in Anger.

They also covered David Bowie's Heroes in 1997 (b-side to D'You Know What I Mean?)

And the Stones' Street Fighting Man in 1998 (b-side to All Around the World)

Their 1995 cover of The Beatles' You've Got to Hide Your Love Away was only released on a Japanese EP.

OK these were all b-sides so not technically hits despite selling a million.

It's a sample, but I will always remember "I'm raving I'm raving" by shut up and dance. The original "walking in memphis" was only released the previous year or so.

I've noticed there are fewer covers these days, or people wait longer before covering something. It wasn't uncommon for 80s songs to be covered and be big hits in the 90s. But now if someone covered a big hit from the 00s it'd bomb. I guess it's partly down to how we consume music now. I suspect a lot of people bought Nicki French's dreadful cover of Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1995 because they wanted the song - whereas if someone did a cover of it now, people would just buy the original on iTunes.

I've noticed that as well. There also seems to be less big hits that are a theme from a movie. Ellie Goulding is the only one I can think of recently.

Anyway, cover versions.

The Power of Love - Celine Dion/Jennifer Rush
It's Too Late - Quartz feat Dina Carroll/Carol King
Disco Inferno - Tina Turner/The Trammps

just a pedantic note, It Must Be Love was a hit for Madness in 1981, not the 90s

It was originally a hit in 1981 like you say, but I think it was rereleased in 1992.

Some more are:-
Candy Flip with Strawberry Fields Forever
Voice of the Beehive with I Think I Love You
Marc Almond with Jackie
Queen & Lisa Stansfield with These Are the Days of Our Lives
Suggs with I'm Only Sleeping

Erasure did covers of "Lay All Your Love On Me", "S.O.S.", "Take A Chance On Me" and "Voulez-Vous" (all originally by Abba).

Oh yes, I forgot this one. This will have been my favourite cover version of the Decade. Admittedly, I got to know Kula's version first.

All Saints - Under the bridge

A decent pop song, but the cover is widely criticized and isn't as good as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers original
