Do any people have experience with buying permanent digital copies of movies from Amazon Instant Video?

Stupid question but if you purchase a movie this way you can then watch it without having a active subscription to Amazon Instant can't you?

Also are you able to then download the movie giving you a copy you can watch offline?

I'm tempted to start getting all my movies this way that I want to own, DVD and blu-ray seems to be fast becoming a dated concept and I'm not someone who needs to own a hard copy of a film or music, quite happy to own things digitally provided I then have easy access to it on a range of devices.

As far as i'm aware if you purchase movies/tv shows you can watch them without having a prime membership i don't know about downloading though.

I purchased Fast and Furious 7 as a digital copy from Amazon and from what I can see its downloadable on most Android/Apple devices, not sure if you can download on your PC though. I'm able to watch it through my phone, tablet, laptop, smart Blu-Ray etc which I think is a far more easy and convenient method these days, think my days of purchasing discs may be over.

I rarely buy discs myself these days i buy the ultraviolet codes from ebay and use flixster on my firetv costs a lot less too.

I've used Flixter a few times, not sure if it's available on as many devices as Amazon though.

Take care with buying from streaming services. Some of the services have a claus hidden in their small print that you only have access for x amount of years. Wuaki.tv for instance will remove access to an "owned" and "bought" movie after three years, and you will have to buy it again.

I don't know if Amazon have this policy, but it may be worth asking.

Also, although it is unlikely that Amazon will go bust any time soon, if they did, everything you bought may disappear. This recently happened with a company in Australia Ezyflix, who after many years shut down, and for those who had hundreds of bought titles, if it wasn't compatible with UltraViolet, they were lost for good.

Amazon don't allow any way to download offline in a way where it can be backed up. So, if this also means computers.

iTunes does allow this. You can download iTunes onto iPhones and iPads, but also computers where you can back them up. If Apple ever went bust, you would have the downloaded versions for good, and iTunes don't have a maximum time period. Once bought, they are owned for life.

I haven't seen anything to suggest this limited ownership applies with Amazon but I will check, if true that's a very harsh tactic as the cost of a digital copy is the same as a blu-ray which obviously you would own permanently and possibly also have a ultra violet digital copy. If the cost of a streaming version was around half of that then a limited ownership maybe wouldn't seem so bad.

I've not really used iTunes for movie purchases as I don't own a Apple TV box but I'm thinking this may be a smart purchase as I'm a dedicated iPhone user.
