For example Ellie Goulding is apparently 28 now, according to her Wikipedia. I'm pretty sure I remember her being 25 or 26 when she debuted with Starry Eyed and thinking at the time that she was relatively old to be winning a BBC Sound of the Year award but also thinking good on her, what does it matter how old somebody is, maybe they've just taken a while. Not everyone can have the oppurtunities to be in the right place to launch a career aged 19 or 21.

That debut was in 2009 or 2010 so she would have to be 30 or so by now, not 28. But it seems admitting that a woman is 30 or more is tantamount to being an old lady or something! I know Paloma Faith and Goldfrapp before used to have fake ages too.

Is it just me getting it wrong or does anyone else remember Ellie being older than this? Or can you think of any other examples of popstars whose ages remained mysteriously young or de-aged?

I think some lie because of how ageist the music industry is at times.

I'm sure Anastasia lied about her age when I'm Outta Love was released, and that was back in 2000.

I might not like the song much, but I do like the fact Rachel Platten topped the UK chart at the tender age of 34. As sad as it seems, the fact Rachel does look younger than her age suggests has probably helped her get chart success.

When I discovered David Guetta was 45, a couple of years ago, I thought that the modern music industry was becoming less ageist. Of course, it's probably different for girls!?

I also know about the case about Paloma when she released her debut, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful in 2009 at the age of 24 - her year of birth was given as 1985 - when in fact the truth came out she was born in 1981. She has stated the reason she did this was so that she could get a record deal.

So Paloma Faith is also 34 years old then. Again, like with Rachel Platten, Paloma doesn't look 34 which is why they're able to get airplay particularly on music channels.

It's quite sad that there could be another really good female singer aged 34 who looks old for her age and therefore doesn't get the same level of support from UK media.

Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe) is another one, though. Although her image was of a shy teenager in that video, she was actually in her late 20s then.

It's funny how things get marketed to younger and younger people now and things like pop music get more and more pigeonholed as being for 'young' people. It seems strange to deliberately cut off such a huge section of the potential market - as Madonna etc are now finding out, the industry doesn't seem interested.

I can't believe Rita Ora is as young as she claims. She looks so much older.

I've no opinion of her either way... but she does look in her mid 30s.
