The Yardbirds

Do they get the recogniton that they deserve. Everyone goes on about The Beatles, The Stones, The Who.ETC.

What about The Yardbirds. They had 3 of the greatest guitarists that this country has ever produced.

They fitted the times quite well and for his ailments Keith Relf was a good singer and Harmonica player. They never wrote many classic songs and their best known ones were written for them or covers. However Jeff Beck said that there was nothing like the Yardbirds back in the day they were originals.

indeed... my fav group , not only for their sound that to me epitomised the best 60's sounds, but the intelligent lyric and ground breaking styles.

'for your love' supposed to have been the first time a film (old fashioned video lol) was shot specifically for the track - its also the first track to feature harpsichord.

employing 'gregorian chant' as backing on tracks like 'still im sad' and 'turn into earth' were groundbreaking...

the single 'shapes of things' was the first rock (non folk) track to tackle the prospect of war and nuclear desolation whilst the b side 'mr youre a better man then i' was the first track to tackle the equality issue, judgement, politically correct thinking years before it time.

they certainly dont get the due recognition they deserved, and they did of course morph into the new yardbirds - led zepplin. thats a pretty impressive cv in my book.
