Could you do a new adaptation of a classic soap?
Hi all
I've been thinking that, considering with the likes of Shakespeare, Dickens, Agatha Christie etc you can have multiple adaptations of the same works over the years and it doesn't dilute the original, could you do it with a soap? I'm not suggesting abandoning the current show and a complete reboot, but I think it would be an inspired idea if, say, Corrie for their next big anniversary were to do a new dramatisation alongside the existing show of the first few episodes (maybe the first 12 Tony Warren ones, don't they make up a self-contained story arc?), with new actors and maybe even a new writer to update the dialogue. Or you could make it in black and white for added "retro" It might connect with today's younger viewers more than a grainy old repeat episode does these days.Who would you cast in the roles? Somebody like Julie Walters for Annie Walker maybe? Or go for the ones from The Road To Coronation Street eg. Lynda Baron or Celia Imrie (although they were playing Violet and Doris rather than Ena and Annie)? James Roache as Ken? Just an idea

It's a nice idea davads. But wouldn't they be setting themselves up for inevitable comparisons to the present day which might find it wanting. I'm surprised the Road to Coronation Street wasn't shown on ITV though instead of BBC 4.

I agree. It was really odd that a film made about a huge iconic beloved soap was hidden away on BBC4

Or they could just clean up the first 12 episodes and show them. Tony Warren's characters are just as vibrant today as they were in 1960 and the dialogue still sparkles.

I think it could work as a short anniversary celebration type thing.
I have to admit, I am loving Wentworth, but it took me the entire first season to stop comparing Bea, Frankie and co, along with some storylines which were the same not not quote, with the Prisoner originals. It was a bit of a mindf*ck for a while if I'm honest
