Debbie Bates was never seen die on screen, and I think Debbie was fed up with life, perfect housewife, perfect mum, Nigel a bit boring in the sack.

Here is evil Liam, Debbie's ex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xuc-IzBAYbs

If Liam and Debbie had a brief fling, before he began his controlling ways again, Debbie's return would make far more sense than Kathy's.

This return would also open up a whole new level of storylines for the soap. including:

Nigel coming back to try rescuing Debbie once again, even though he hates her for what shes done.
Claire Bates returning, clashing with Kathy over her infatuation with Ian and keeping Janine's place in the show warm until she returns.
Liam being Jay's dad or Debbie being Lola's mum or Nigel being Ben's dad
Nigel rekindling his friendship with Dot and helping her out of jail
Grant visiting his old friend

So EE - bring back Debbie and Nigel.

No thanks

There comes a point where too many past characters returning stops shows from moving forward.

It's true that we never saw Debbie's death but it's hardly an issue like it was with Kathy. She was not a major character. We did see her funeral and someone (Nigel?) would've ID'd the body.

The actress, Nicola Duffett, got fed up on EastEnders and asked bosses to kill her character off. Paul Bradley, who played Nigel, is unlikely to return as well as he's in Holby and has previously declined to.

Please no more back from the dead characters. Besides which, Debbie was NOT unhappy with her life, she loved Nigel, she loved Clare and as her next of kin, Nigel would have identified her body.

Also, as said Bradley is seemingly quite content on Holby so has no reason to return. If he was ever going to, his chance would have been when Clare returned or when Dot was in trouble such as her trial.

Gemma Bissix has returned once to EE. Since Birkwood killed off Clare Devine from HO for no reason I wonder if we'll ever see Ms Bates in EE again.

Hard to believe the character was friends with Sonia.

I always got the impression the actress never enjoyed her second stint on EE. She was signed for six months and when her contract was up for renewal, she declined and had a quick and swift exit, which is bizzare as she never returned to Hollyoaks until a year later or had any other jobs to quickly go to after leaving. I could be wrong.

Well, if Kathy can come back when you'd have expected Ian as next of kin to ID the body...

Nigel identified the body and immediately threw up. She's dead.

They'd have no place in today's EE

Agreed. If Grant was around then maybe Nigel could find his way back or if Clare stuck around.

Ian never ID'd the body he went over to South Africa and the body had already been ID'd he never saw the body if my memory serves me right.

Kathy's sister-in-law, a character we have never met and know nothing about, identified her body allowing them some leeway in bringing the character back. If Ian had ID'd her body then there's no way Kathy would be on the show now.

Cindy's mum identified her body. (It's a myth that Ian did).

The actor is in Holby and I think he fits in there. I don't think there should be too many returns as I agree it can hold the show back if too many characters return. We've also had two "back from the dead" characters return, we don't need any more. Kathy was a major character so I can understand her being rewritten for her return but not for Nigel. I also agree he wouldn't fit any more and to be frank what or who would he return for?

Is that actually what happened at the time or has it been retconned to justify the absurdity going on now?

I still remember back then thinking it odd Ian never saw his mother's bidy and that it had been Gavin's sister who identified it, so this was the case all along. This pretty weak event just meant be easier for Gavin to return

Gavin would have been Kathy's next of kin, spouse supercedes children. Of course he was 'dead' too but his sister would have been deemed close enough to both for formal identification, especially as Kathy's only grown up child was on the other side of the world.

Nigel did identify Debbie's body.
