Can I add people who pronounce 'sixth ' as 'sickth'? I've even heard it on the news!

So many pet hates of mine here and so good to see them pointed out. I was beginning to think the use of "could/should of" was so accepted now, nobody even noticed.

I'd just like to add "you was..." and "we was...".

I think most people say this. It's probably only the RP speakers who say "hand bag".

Fast connected speech sounds quite different to the spelling of the word, and then again, spellings of words are often unrelated to their pronunciation....lamb is said "lam", good on you is said most often as "gurronyer"....etc.

How's it a mispronunciation? How is "should've" pronounced differently that "should ov?"

I think that you are missing the point, so many people are actually writing should of etc. which as the opening post pointed out is incorrect. Reading the book Eats, Shoots and Leaves shows why correct grammar and punctuation is necessary.

I call mine a hanbag. I'd sound like I was trying to be Lady Bracknell if I pronounced it a handbag.

I also say should ov instead should have and I have been known to say miggle instead of middle and bockle instead of bottle. It's an accent thing. Thankfully I couldn't care less if my accent makes people embarrassed or they think I'm dumb. I choose not to judge people over grammar and accents.

It's one of my personal 'hates' too, OP. It's not a recent 'grammatical error' though, well not in the USA at least. Whilst studying for an English degree a few years ago I was taken aback to see something like 'should of' appear in Scott FItzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'. That was written in 1925! So maybe it's an Americanism that's now becoming the 'norm' over here.

And don't even get me started on the word congraDulations. When did the T change to a D? Drives me mad.

Or, as Rylan says, "arst" instead of ask. He often says on BOTS, when speaking to the panel, "I gotta-rarst-ya" (meaning "I've got to ask you"). Actually, he doesn't even say the Ts in "gotta".

More and more people seem to be using went on the end too - should of went instead of should have gone.

This is so irritating. Even Paxo can't pronounce it correctly!

Another mild irritation is when Marcus says that 'something is playing on' someone's mind . The saying was originally 'preying on', but I suppose language does change and evolve.

However the 'should ov' business is due to misunderstanding, or never having been taught grammar.

And I'm a fine one to criticise anyway. I always say 'samwich' even though I know it is incorrect. Its a sort of verbal tic!
