I have never understood the purpose of bandanas? He must actually wash his, it's gleaming white. He must actually go tongue trouble of washing it and drying it so that he can wear it and he doesn't seem to ask himself what the point is wearing it.

Did pirates used to wear them? Is that how it started?

To hide baldness usually. Has he got a bald spot, I haven't really noticed whenever he's bandana-free

It's not a bandana. It's a do-rag.

No, people are different from you. And me. Because they are, doesn't make them mental.

It's extremely common in the US. Nothing to write home about.

Not likely, because it's common among young African-American males. It's just a fashion statement.

A lot of the guys around here of Afro Caribbean descent wear them. This is what they tell me. Its partly practical, many of shave their hair off and the bandana or durag protects the head from cold and the sun. It also helps absorb sweat and stops it running into their eyes (this is particularly true when dancing). And its partly cultural to wear a head covering of some sort whether that be a cap or a hat or a cloth covering like a bandana.
