There is something particularly grating about a nasally American accent, especially when it is attached to a loud voice and obnoxious character.

A bit like listening to a chainsaw, which even for the most hardened soul would be very irritating after a while..

Is that racist? I don't think so. It must be hell in that house. Me, I like the quiet life.

Xenophobic, crass and with ugly, violent overtones. Guess Chris is a UKIP man...

Racist is a dumb term for it. He was pig headed, nationalistic and an a****hole. Some of them were the same back, although not as often hinging that on someone's nationality.

Are you really that thick? Or just pushing buttons?

There is no single American accent for you to comment upon. There are HUNDREDS of them. 319 million people living across 3.8 million square miles. Only a total ignorant, xenophobic pl***ker would think that those people could be pegged by a few lazy generalisations.

I bet you'd defend to the hilt the diversity of the UK--a country that's one fourtieth the physical size and one fifth the population. Do you speak like a Scotsman? Or even like someone born a County away from you? I'd bet not, and that you'd rage for days if someone suggested you did.

Very odd, very off putting and quite shocking, I would imagine, to any 'foreigners' watching.

Racist? No. Ignorant and bigoted? Yup. In keeping with the entire series thus far.”

I agree with everything you have said, that's why I cannot get into this series. Yes British people never have disagreements or fights, according to Emma and now Burnside.

Its amazing how little comprehension some posters have on here. Try for a simple second to put yourself in someone else's shoes. They have enjoyed 2 weeks of continuous arguments and shouting. They are all exhausted now and jokes like that are bound to come out - it's what people do.

Really no one should ever be over reacting at comments in Big Brother. These people are at the edge of their emotions and it's very difficult to behave in a way that everybody would appreciate, if it's not actually impossible ( just look at the wide range of comments on here to see the truth of that. Many people are actually supporting Farrah's behaviour).

Sure, it's so easy to be offended by Chris's comment. But when you look at how much stress and pressure they've all been under because of Farah it's easy to see what comments like that slip out. They're just another way of mitigating the massive amount of stress they're under.

Did you miss the reminder that Chris said on his VT - and repeated in his interview - that loud jabbering AMERICAN WOMEN would be his worst possible housemate. Two lovely bits of bigotry right there for our old worn out Chris (who hadn't, at that point, met any of them).

How the hell are you people falling for this whipping up of awfulness? It really is Orwellian. Let's tell these proud citizens of Oceania that the US has broken away from the UK and we are now at war with West Oceania. And let's get someone who truly hates and has always hated West Oceania to preach to them about it. While we're at it, let's focus all our broadcasts on militant West Oceanics and show them how awful they are.

Would ye ever take a look at yourselves, viewers? And listen to yourselves?

At the risk of also being labelled xenophobic, I belive that one of the issues is that many Americans do not do inside voices. Conversations are often conducted at outside voice volume, which we interpret as them drawing attention to themselves and being too loud and overbearing. It's a cultural difference but one where we are prone to misread the intention.

Because, as he said they are typically loud spoken, brash, and arrogant (AKA the worst combination of character traits you need in the house).

That said, again I reiterate: they're all exhausted and emotional and maybe their true nature does come to the surface. Regardless, they can be forgiven for making a few racist or sexist or (insert x-ist) comments in the heat of the moment without it being analysed to the Nth degree.

Absolutely right.

There is also that he and others are using "American women" as an identifier for Jenna and Farrah ie the two woman who are American. Unfortunately that can be misinterpreted and extrapolated to mean all American women which I don't think is the intention.

Eh? That doesn't make sense.

If he was living with a load of really loud and annoying Nigeria s and said the same thing, it wouldn't have been racist. Just a joke.

There's lots of Scottish accents as well but people still refer to someone having a "Scottish accent". To some people all the accents in a country sound similar but others can differentiate. It's a matter of perspective

People keep focusing on the word racist but does it really matter whether the OP said racist or bigoted, they are both just as bad. So he probably wants to know if you think it was bigoted.

It was a bigoted thing to say but i don't think he hates Americans in general, he just said some stupid shit cause he was feeling stressed which I'm sure everyone does.

He said the same stupid, bigoted shit on the way in, though.

Well that's BB for you. Perpetuating stereotypes, setting people off against each other (cos harmony is boring, apparently) and reinforcing the tribal nature of combat and futile arguments.

The stupid comments in this thread are unbelievable. All I can say is, a lot of you people must live in a bubble where nobody nteracts or speaks to others.

I get really annoyed when people say racist when they mean xenophobic or chauvinistic. They are just spouting things that they think they should say.
