will Sam Smith beat Duran Duran with new Bond theme song ?
Duran Duran have held the honour of having the highest placed Bond theme in both the UK and the USA with a View To A Kill (UK 2 USA 1) - do you think Sam Smith can go one better here and reach number one ?

Could there have been a more boring and uninspiring choice? Adele wasn't available so we'll just get Male Adele.

It's such a shame they went with such an obvious choice. Although I'm not a fan, Radiohead would have been interesting. Sam Smith's song will inevitably be a tortured ballad.

I actually think Sam Smith will get to #1 in the UK with this Bond song, and that's without even hearing it.
As for USA, it'll probably go top 5 but don't think it's going to be a #1 single there. |

Adele's Bond theme was so disappointing. Bond By Numbers. Haven't liked a Bond theme since Carly Simon tbh, it's supposed to be a career pinnacle, but since then it's almost been career death.
The Bond producers will probably have listened to demos from several people who were invited to put forward a song so I doubt if they would have chosen one similar to last year's. I am expecting it to be very good and hope it will get to #1. |

It won't be anything like Adele's Bond theme. Different voice, different writers, different producers and Disclosure were also involved in some of the production. Sam Smith and Disclosure are always a good mixture.

I think Sam will deliver a good one, especially if Disclosure are doing the production.
Skyfall for me was one of the dullest ones, i much prefer the efforts from Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner and Garbage |

I really hope the new Bond theme is going to be a bit more upbeat than Skyfall.
Most of the recent ones haven't been a patch on some of the early ones like Carly Simon. We shall see! |

To be honest, most Bond themes are pretty dire - Thunderball, all of the Moores except Live and Let Die; Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Skyfall.

'Skyfall' was a dirge and Sam Smith sounds like more of the same. Probably should have been Kanye or Jay-Z this time? |

The comments complaining about Sam Smith is an "obvious" choice are a bit unfair. They went with some off the beat picks for theme songs the last few times in Chris Cornell, Jack White/Alicia Keys and they were absolutely terrible and sank like a stone. Adele's anthem was fantastic, a real throwback. I think it played a large part in the huge success of Skyfall too by helping saturate the airwaves. Sam Smith will do a great job I predict, I am looking forward to his theme.

Then you have 'Live and Let Die', 'Goldfinger', 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'Nobody Does it Better', 'All in the time in the World', 'For Your Eyes Only'....

Why all the hatred for Skyfall on here? I thought it was a fantastic Bond theme. They absolutely nailed it. After three average themes they we're back on track with what I regard as one of the best songs of the last 15 years. I absolutely love it and fear that the new theme will not live up to it. The worst was probably Madonna's Die Another Day. "Analyse this Sigmund Fraud". What the hell was that about?

The OP was right about the Duran Duran Bond Theme reaching No.2 in the UK.
However, Adele's Bond Theme also reached No.2 here. It is almost certain that Sam Smith's awful Bond Theme will be the 1st one to reach No.1 here in the UK. It is all about how popular he is & nothing to do with the song being deserving of a No.1 place. Dan Wootton, The Sun's Showbiz 'Expert' called Sam's song 'An instant classic', the other day & tried to make out that those who dislike it are 'haters', who know no better. I think that he just praises anything, in order to keep Acts like Sam giving him interviews. In the USA the only Bond Theme to reach No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 is the Duran Duran one, from 1985. But Live & Let Die by Paul McCartney & Wings got to No.1 in the USA Cash Box Top 100 in 1973. It was a No.2 Hit in the Billboard Chart, as was Carly Simon's 1977 Theme, Nobody Does It Better, from The Spy Who Loved Me. Neither were Top 5 Hits here in the UK, with Wings reaching No.9 & Carly reaching No.7. |

After 24 hours, Writing's On The Wall was #5 on the daily Spotify streaming chart more than likely because of the initial buzz surrounding the premiere of the song itself - hence why it rocketed to #1 on iTunes in the same 24 hour period. Since then people have realised it hasn't lived up to the expectations the way the UK media built up the song before Radio 1 played it. So 48 hours later, the song was starting to decline in sales on iTunes (R. City's Locked Away soon started catching up to Sam Smith on iTunes if Kworb is anything to go off). Whilst on Spotify after 2 days, it plummeted from #5 to #16 which is shocking for a song to drop that much after one day. The buzz has worn off, and I think people have already started to lose a bit of interest in the song. Yes, it's gonna be #1 but it won't be fondly remembered in the future. If only Skyfall by Adele had been released on a Sunday, that would've become the first Bond song to become a UK #1 and would've been so much more worthy of that honour. |
