This month we see Kate Oates deliver the climax to the Katie Sugden death plot when

Spoiler

We also have Stuart Blackburn delivering Corrie's live episode and climax to the Platt / Callum saga, the latest turn in a tenure which many have found questionable.

I would argue that these two stories seem to be the logical moment for Blackburn to step down from Corrie after nearly three whole years. I think Kate Oates would be the best candidate as successor to Blackburn. She's been at Emmerdale two and a half years and has done a superb job.

Do we think Blackburn's departure could be announced before the year is out, and do we think the successor will be Oates? Or will the Hat continue his reign of mediocrity over the nation's longest running soap?

I have a feeling it will be announced in October.

I'd rather if they got someone new and not just swapping producers.

Is it about what you (or anyone) would rather though?

Stuart Blackburn did Emmerdale first then moved to Corrie. I think that might be ITV's strategy - have producers gain experience on Emmerdale then move to Corrie.

I think Kate Oates has proven herself very capable and would really rescue CS from the doldrums. In fact, I will be surprised if the next producer is not her. It's a question of when, not if I think. And I hope it's sooner rather than later. If they announce it in October and she starts in January her first episodes could air around March/April.

I think its a forgone conclusion that Kate Oates will take over Corrie, I've looked at the history of producers on both shows and 9 times out of 10 Emmerdale's producer moves to Corrie.

I think overall she'll be good for Corrie and add some excitement and maybe a few surprises to the show, I just hope she doesn't focus on few core characters like she does at Emmerdale and force some horrid paring on us like Ross/Debbie.

The last time a Corrie producer had more than 3 years at the helm was Sue Pritchard from 24 January 1994 to 14 March 1997. So Blackburn probably will be replaced next year.

I hate this modern trend of producers touring the soaps. It's no wonder the same plots are being repeated. The only way we'll get new ideas is with fresh talent.

3 times out of 21, to be precise (counting from 1972 when Emmerdale started).

There are only so many ideas. Nothing is truly original.

What's more important is a strong, experienced leader... though Blackburn has failed at that on CS, I think Kate Oates is different and her career would reach a peak during a Corrie tenure as producer.

She would make such a marvellous producer of the Street, I don't mind that we'd have Emmerdale used as a stepping stone again, I think I'd enjoy her take on the show. She previously worked alongside Phil Collinson, whose work I preferred to Blackburn's. I'd be interested to know just what stories in particular at the Street she was directly responsible for though.

I thought it was more than that, so I might have over stated a bit

Perhaps ideas was the wrong word. Corrie needs a new broom producer and they tend to be people who haven't worked on soaps before.

Kate Oates is terribly repetitive and is terrible at aftermaths. She's been very good overall but Emmerdale has been very poor in the aftermath of the crash imo

They could do well to pick from the pool of producers who've worked across a lot of the big ITV dramas maybe. I mean, they'd never be able to get the likes of, say, Gareth Neame, but someone of his calibre known for the big dramas would be a dream. The Mr Selfridge bosses are almost all exclusively ITV and very, very talented. Imagine the possibilities!

I think Kate Oates and Stuart Blackburn have both failed in the casting department, and in the storylines. I would like to see two completely new producers for Emmerdale and Coronation Street

Mr Selfridge was amazing. I loved Katherine Kelly (ex Coronation Street who played Becky) in it. It would be great if the Mr Selfridge lot took over Corrie! Can you imagine how much better it would be? At the moment Corrie seems stagnant. It needs an overhaul and new bosses to do that.

Why does everyone want ED to loose it's producer just to make CS good again? Those who want KO at CS, if she goes there she won't be at ED, but I guess it's ok to toss Emmerdale under a bus to rescue precious sainted Coronation Street.

You do have a point. Emmerdale could end up getting some horrible producer that destroys it. But I don't think that will happen, and I'll be happy with anyone who will be willing to end the Debbie/Ross nonsense.

Terribly risky, though.

No that this would ever happen but what about someone like Shonda Rhimes who has created several soapy shows with Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. I'd love to see Shonda do a real soap, I think it'd be amazing!

Not yet i hope. I wouldn't mind her doing EE to be honest. Or to stay at ED forever.

KO going to CS doesn't mean that ED is going to dip in quality - they could get somebody equally as good on board. Kate going to CS would (hopefully) ensure a rise in quality and would get rid of Stuart Blackburn for good.

I do, however, agree that it is a shame that getting a job at CS is seen as a promotion from ED. Corrie hasn't been fit to lick Emmerdale's shoes the last few years.

I'd like someone else to take over from Blackburn. Why should Emmerdale lose a decent producer? It's these sorts of topics which further the idea that Emmerdale is second class and Corrie is first class which is simply not true.

Can you imagine the headlines?
