Kettle's for the most part in the US are stove top and whistle when the waters boiled.

She never used an electric kettle before. Perhaps you didn't know that we use kettles that go on a stove top for the most part.

We do, always have but it's THIS type. Electric ones are relatively new here.

Well I don't use it, mine is electric and boils to different temperatures depending on what you're brewing.

I heard it's because many Americans go out for coffee, they're not so big on instant like in the UK, they drink less hot tea than us and someone also said something about the lower voltage they have over there being an issue for some electric kettles. Not sure if that's true? Maybe they needed some redesign to work under the lower voltage in the US?

We have had this conversation before on a CBB thread, it is not common in the US to use an electric kettle, i cannot remember the ins and outs of who it was, but this topic has definitely come up before.

I had absolutely no idea the electric kettle hadn't made it across the pond.

I'm surprised such a convenient small appliance isn't popular there.

Didn't this crop up in the last CBB when another American hadn't used an electric kettle before?

Yes, you are correct. It does have something to do with the voltage. I can't remember exact details. That is why they have kettles to use on the top of the hob/stove or whatever they choose to call it.

As a matter of fact OP lots of countries don't have much use for kettles. Have you never stayed in a holiday apartment in a Spanish/Greek/Italian holiday resort. They rarely have kettles.

I think we are in the minority with this piece of apparatus.

We've had this in BB before too I think. Didn't someone put stock cubes in the kettle to make stock?

there are some kettles that have had me baffled for a minute or two.

This is true. It's not that they are unheard of but they are not common. If they have them at all, it is generally hob ones not electric.
