I always boil water in an electric kettle first and then pour it into the saucepan when I'm cooking pasta/rice/vegetables etc

electric hobs take an age to boil water

not really. Yank is more of an affectionate term. Like Aussie for Australian

are you being a tad sensitive?

Not at all, And no, it is not at all affectionate. It's says right in the dictionary "derogatory." Because you think it's a nice word isn't really a good way to judge it. I'm American. I know. It's an offensive word. Look it up.

That's what I said yesterday and I got bashed for it.

Enrico is extremely sensitive He had a go at me the other day for saying 'Tasha' for Natasha, saying he 'doesn't correspond with people who use pet names for housemates' when it was him who quoted me He also snapped at several other posters over silly things.

Is it really derogatory?

Since a film was made called 'Yanks', I always assumed that it was acceptable in the same way as Limeys and Aussies.

I do not know the origins of these nicknames so forgive me if it is an insulting word from the past but I'm interested to know.

it's all in the context of its use

As Scoop explained with his N-word speech

if someone called me a 'Brit' I'd be fine with that

If you all want to remain ignorant, and go about offending people .... have at it. Be as offensive as you wish to be. It's apparent you're good at it.

And something else you're ignorant about ... Enrico isn't a he.

But you're right. I don't listen to opinions of people who call housemates by names they're not known by. They're fangirls, and not logical thinkers.

Yeah, go and call Scoop that word. And then tell him it was context.

But Yank, you're wrong about. Yankee is less offensive, but doesn't mean "Americans."

there's even a US baseball team called the Yankees, so it can't be that offensive.

I don't find Limey remotely offensive

Yeah, it really is.

"Limeys" is also considered derogatory. But it's not much used. I don't think most Americans would even know what it referred to. The British probably use it more. "Aussies", I think is perfectly fine.

I'm sorry, but Is "Yanks" the same word as "Yankees"? Nope.

And again, YOU don't get to decide.

How have I offended you now? I think your argument over the use of yank is with someone else

Maybe I should go to a US forum and start whinging about how offensive they all are and see what the reaction is? To be honest, you're lucky people here have some patience.

Names they're not known by? Tasha is short for Natasha in the UK (And the US as far as I'm aware), and even some of the housemates call her Tasha. It's not a pet name. People shorten my name, it's not a crime

Well, you're not coming across as a very logical thinker if I'm honest, just an angry person who snaps at people for silly reasons.

there's also a football team named redskins, and 67 percent of native americans find the term offensive.

Are you kidding? If I have to explain it to you, it's not worth it, because you won't understand anyway. At least, not if this post with your claiming of innocence is anything to go by.

Woe is you eh?

All I know is, you've been whining at anyone and everyone in the BB threads recently. Perhaps not the best way to get your points across, but it's up to you.

If this was a US show, and you had Brits competing against US housemates, do you think you’d get threads on US forums such as “So glad the boring Americans will be booted on Tuesday”? You only have to look at the house to see how hyper competitive the Americans are. This forum is more balanced, in fact I'd say it's even weighted heavily towards US housemates most years. Look how bad US housemates have to get before UK fans will not support them! And even then, Jenna and Farrah have their fans on this forum!

See, I think that’s the major cultural difference here. A large number of Americans are pro USA no matter what, Brits are more objective. We don’t mind if a US person wins on a UK show- we aren't so proud like that. All I see from many US people is a major chip on shoulder situation, and you are just perpetuating that stereotype.

Have I missed the part where the OP admitted that they were just ignorant about America and the fact that they don't generally use or own electric kettles and apologised for the wording and wee angry face in the opening post?

Wow. Just start heaping more stereo-types on Americans, I think you missed a couple. Sure you don't mean to call us Yanks? Some people are just doomed to remain ignorant all their lives.

But if you'd really like to educate yourself (I can live in hope) here's and American-based message board (but be warned, its a "no holds barred" board where language is no issue) that has one main thread (and others if you care to explore) about CBBUK : http://survivorsucks.yuku.com/topic/122429

I think you'll notice there, they pretty much treat them all individually. And, surprise, surprise ... mostly call them by their names. Not "The Americans" or "The British."

Maybe you should try and break it then, instead of perpetuating it? You have to admit you were kind of out of line with people in the BB highlight thread the other day.

It's fine to go on the attack instead, and I do understand your frustration at being stereotyped, but I think you need to chill out a bit! I've not really seen anything directed at you, apart from someone calling you a yank, big deal. I've had people on US forums call me a 'limey' and throw all sorts of silly stereotypes at me when I barely said anything other than where I was from (and I think it's fair to say you've said more than that), but it's not the end of the world is it?

You're so right. It's all my fault that you're forced to use xenophobic names, and call me derogatory names and stereo-type me. How silly of me. It must be because I'm one of those stupid Americans.

You do understand if it had happened once, that would be one thing. It's over and over and over. By people like you. By the people on the show. By the show itself. And then people like you jump all over me, and tell me that it's just fine if you use bad words to describe me, because they're not bad. You decided they're not. And yes, that frustrates the hell out of me. I loathe ignorance, and an unwillingness to learn.

You may think I need to chill out, but I think you need to learn a thing or twenty.

Forced to use xenophobic names? See, this just shows how little you listen because it wasn't even me who called you a yank, that argument is with someone else. If you want to be oversensitive about it, I suggest you take it up with them.

What's over and over again? Stereotypes? I get that all the time whenever I watch US shows! The Brit stereotypes are awful. You can't think it's only you, surely? All countries have stereotypes of other countries, UK to US and vice versa.

Which bad words exactly? You're sounding a bit drama-queen-ish to be honest, and there's a desperation to play the victim. You know how you said you don't like the pet names? I'm kind of allergic to this poor me, drama queen act.

Aenima hasn't call you a derogatory name once in this thread. You have him confused with other posters.

However instead of posting about the show you have consistently posted about other forum members.
