At the start of Corrie the other day, alongside the P for product placement, three was a small red square. Any idea what it meant?

Its a warning that poor script writing follows.

In that case they should have been showing red squares for the past few years1

Yes. I think it actually means - some viewers may find the declining quality of the show upsetting/offensive.

I've often noticed this and wondered what it was.

So 'P' stands for 'Product Placement' does it? How do we know this? Surely all dramas have recognisable products scattered around the sets, so what's the issue with a commercial TV station making a special point about product placement? And, unless it was going to be horrific or pornographic, why tell us at all?

'Official' product placement has only been allowed in the UK since 2011. Companies now pay money to have their products featured in a show in some way.

Product placement was never a big issue in the UK. Watch any soap episodes from the 70s, 80s or even the early 90s and you'll see lots of recognisable products and brands. Characters would also readily speak of 'real' brands in conversation. However, something shifted in the mid-to-late 90s when brand protection and advertising became a legal minefield. If a show or TV channel was appearing to favour one product over another then a competing brand could launch legal proceedings. For instance, if the Rovers was shown to only sell Pepsi to customers and for characters to make quite a fanfare about it, Coca Cola could protest and claim damages.

So, between the mid-90s up to 2011 you'll see that a lot of programmes, especially soaps, created 'fake' brands so that they could avoid the legal teams of angry companies. Coronation Street has a lot of these fake brands - the Daily Pulse newspaper, Stagg canned beer, Chit Chat magazine... Newton and Ridley ...

The change in the law in 2011 meant that companies could pay directly to have their brands featured on a programme. This is generally very understated but there were fears that shows would take on a somewhat American-edge with endless scenes of characters talking about how much they love Doritos or Heinz baked beans. This hasn't happened ... yet ...

The 'P' is part of their duty to the consumer to inform them that the programme features 'advertising'.

Soap operas were originally continuing dramas, sponsored by soap companies in the US

MIght have been a "cue dot" for the subtitles if you had them turned on. They're sometimes done in different colours in addition to the usual white.

I realise this thread's gone cold, but on a similar subject to the 'P' ...

In the top right hand corner there's the word 'Subtitles' (self explanatory) but immediately to the right of that there's a square speech bubble with the letters 'AD' enclosed.

So what does that signify .. anyone know?

So it's the same as 'With commentary', as found among the extra features on DVD/Blu-ray movies?

No, totally different (well, different from a "director's commentary" if that's what you mean). It's a service for the blind and visually impaired, providing detail of what happens on screen that can't be discerned from just hearing the sound - this can be everything from what a location or landscape looks like or the layout of a room to a character's clothing, facial expressions and actions. It's a fascinating and very worthwhile service.
