I don't LIKE the design. It's terrible. It looked fine on paper, but apparently the people making the props went a bit wrong, hence the strange, hunchback, pinhead Daleks we ended up with.

I was delighted when they did a U-turn, and relegated these Daleks to an upper class. To me, they worked as a higher class. Especially with the updated design, which made them look semi-decent. Compare these two photos.

See what I mean? What an improvement. Still not great, but so much better. But since then, these Daleks have vanished from the show entirely. You'd have thought, after spending so much on five models, and then revamping them as well, that the production team would want to get some more use out of them. But they haven't been on the actual show since 2012 now, as far as I know.

There are rumours that they were impractical and heavy, and gave the team a fair bit of trouble (being so heavy that the actors were unable to move or stop them on cue) but it now seems as though they might not be back at all.

Fair enough. It didn't work, and they were right to bring back the brilliant bronze design. But they could have handled it so much better. If they want rid of the Paradigm, WRITE THEM OUT. I'd have loved to have seen a Dalek civil war story, where the bronze Daleks win.

Rant over. It does disappoint me though. Sure, they might appear in the upcoming series. If so, I'll feel somewhat of a dolt. But I wouldn't be surprised if they never appear again. Which might not be a shame in itself, but I think that the writers really missed an opportunity by not giving them more to do, or at least a proper exit.

They should have written them out properly, auctioned the props, and got back the money they wasted on making them in the first place.

There's no sign of them in the upcoming Dalek story but I think that may be more down to continuity - I still think this story is set before they existed from the Daleks point of view, so they can't appear. Whether they do later on remains to be seen.

I'm in a minority that quite likes them, especially the White Supreme. I don't think they had a good introduction (the set was poor and the roll out cheesy) but their role as superior Daleks was an interesting one I still hope to see again. The new paint jobs look good on the red and blue ones so far and I think their names leave good scope for some different Dalek stories.

They were a cash grab that backfired badly due to poor design, I know some don't mind them and its all subjective but I think they look terrible which is all the more baffling as they came after the superb Bronze design, and I think many others have a similar opinion.

I believe they are trying to quietly forget about them. Don't think its anything to do with what time it takes place in. Asylum of the Daleks was used to bring back the Bronze Daleks and relegated the power ranger Daleks to the background and a support roll for the white one but mostly it was the Bronze, and then in Into the Dalek which is set in the future it was all Bronze with no Mighty Morphin Daleks to be seen, if this continues (which I think it will) then Asylum can be seen as the story used to faze the multi-coloured monstrosities out of the show.

Just to point out Asylum was set in the Future as well.

As to the new paradigm Daleks the two main problems with them were that they looked like they were made out of plastic and their hunchback.

The first has been partly improved with the new paint job though the casing round their weapons still looks plastic, the hunchback I'm guessing can't be replaced without building totally new props.

We'll probably have to wait till they cast a short Doctor again before they invest in all new (shorter) Dalek props.

The only thing I'm curious about is what the special weapons pod was supposed to do.

In asylum the neckbin was moved back and the fins were removed from the weapons hatch. In the two minutes or so that we see the Supreme Dalek's backside you can see that the hump has gone entirely.

I want to know why the Eternal Dalek was 'eternal'.

Supreme, Strategist, Scientist and Drone they all make sense...the last one is a bit of an enigma. I still think they'd have had some real longevity out of Dalek stories by focusing on each of the Paradigm's strengths...had they been better received. We could have had a war-style siege story involving the Drone, we could have had a complex thriller involving the Strategist, we could have had a complex and thought-provoking mad-scientist style story with the Scientist, timey-wimey something or other with the Eternal and so on. It's less repetitive, and makes use of those Daleks strengths as superiors, whilst the typical Bronze Daleks do all the work.

I think I'd have preferred this to what we actually got - Into the Dalek felt both by-the-numbers, overly familiar and ultimately like it toyed with an idea that was best left to the imagination (like with Journey to the Centre of the Tardis).

I think it's been said - either in reviews or on GB somewhere - that the opening two parter of Series 9 doesn't feature them at all. Which is a shame, they were looking 10 times better in Asylum.

If they do appear, it will likely be in the background.

It was a complete waste of money making the teletubbies daleks.

Will have to do a rewatch.

If you follow a line along the front of the Dalek casing it still projects up to the front of the head, so I don't think that's been moved back at all.

All they appear to have done is make the 'spine' bit at the back thinner so that it tucks under the middle ring bit rather than go up into it. A minor modification, probably all they could do to improve the bump without spending much money.

Something I've always wondered about Asylum, is whether the planet exploding was just poor CGI or a deliberate effect to bring the asylum back in the future. If you watch carefully, the missiles are all coming from the front of the planet but in the bottom-right corner of the planet you can see something in the atmosphere flying from behind the planet, and it doesn't explode. More importantly, the planet starts to fade away like Gallifrey disappearing in TEoT before the missiles hit and continues to fade to nothing just as the missiles strike. You can clearly see the stars behind the planet showing through, so it's as though the entire planet did an emergency temporal shift.

IMO the best paint job was the paint job on the 'servant' Daleks in Victory for the Daleks but I doubt that they will make an appearance though.

Brunel, if you watch the drone emerge on victory you can see that the neck bin overhangs the front of the Dalek a little but this seems to have been corrected for Asylum.

Do you have a screenshot? I can't see it in the one I posted. The only difference I can see between the red Dalek from Victory and the white one from Asylum is the 'spine' bit being thinner.

I do hope so. I've got myself hoping it's a pre-Time War visit to Skaro - before the Daleks abandoned Skaro as shown in Destiny of the Daleks.

On the other hand, that makes it a bit difficult for Davros to appear in part two - he was in suspended animation all that time. So maybe it's on a post-Destiny repopulated Skaro with a shiny new city. Unless, of course, the story involves the Doctor rewriting post-Genesis history in some way to make Davros available in a pre-Destiny Skaro.

Did the daleks ever repopulate Skaro in the tenth Doctor's time? Don't think so. It was all hanging around in voids and the Medusa Cascade, wasn't it? Which makes me think if it's post Time War then it would be a post-Victory Skaro, and they've built a new city on the old design (but pre-Asylum because that showed Skaro as abandoned). Victory was all about the New Paradigms running off to rebuild themselves as a permanent fixture, though, so not having New Paradigms would be very odd.

When did the seventh Doctor destroy Skaro - it was 1963 wasn't it?

It's all very confusing. I can't wait for them to spend at least three or four minutes on dialogue that carefully explains Dalek history to the audience and make everything fit in properly. Including all the seeming contradictions between The Daleks / Invasion of Earth / Genesis. The Doctor could get out some diagrams or something.

Of course I'm just guessing Davros might be in part two - if he's not then continuity all gets a bit easier. So let's hope there's no Davros. It's tidier that way.

I think it'll be a case of seeing him in two different time zones. I highly doubt we'll get any sort of Davros story that doesn't show him in his Dalek-wheelchair form as well, if only for the sake of more mainstream viewers. As more of a fan I know I'd be disappointed to learn that I was getting a Davros story only to then not see him at all as I know him. I suspect we may get Davros and Young Davros.

Maybe Davros tries to kill the Doctor in the past but ends up putting himself into a wheelchair.

As a bit of speculation,

Probably the Scientist Dalek discovered a design improvement, which the original New Paradigm Daleks implemented by creating new Daleks and then allowed themselves to be destroyed because they were inferior.

Undoubtedly. You simply can't have Davros without him being in the chair at some point. But what I meant was that from the moment the earliest daleks had autonomy right up until the daleks abandoned Skaro, chair-bound Davros was in suspended animation. If the Dalek City bit of the story is pre-Time War then either Davros has to be unfrozen (making stories from Destiny onwards a bit funny) or it has to be a future post-Time War, post-Journey's End Davros somehow back on historic Skaro (and we ignore that frozen Davros is also somewhere in a bunker).

If the chair-bound Davros part of the story is post Time War (i.e. after Journey's End) then I'll just have to accept the Daleks returned to Skaro (although Asylum showed us it abandoned), built a new city and filled it with a variety of old shape daleks, but no New Paradigm daleks (the daleks that supervised its building).

I'm joking really, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's barely explained at all. My bet is that the chair-bound Davros we meet will be a Journey's End survivor - because that just makes so much sense from a drama point of view. How that Davros fits in with a Dalek City remains to be seen. I was hoping for a Dalek Historical, but probably won't get it.
