He didn't try very hard did he if he just mentioned it when he first saw the script. He should've tried again when they were about to film it.

Interesting, very interesting. ![]() Coronation Street's Michael Le Vell has said that he "flagged up" the script mistake revolving around the death of Kevin Webster's baby 15 years ago. The mistake saw writers forget about the important storyline during an emotional scene between the Webster family. However, actor Michael Le Vell who plays Kevin Webster, says that he noticed the mistake when he first saw the script. "I did mention it when I saw the script but it fell on deaf ears at the time. Kevin and Jenny have this bond that could be hopefully used as a story," he revealed to the Daily Mirror. The erroneous scenes involved Kevin telling his daughter Sophie that it "must be hard burying one of your kids", following the death of her girlfriend Maddie Heath. Yet in 2000, Kevin and his then-wife Alison's days-old baby died from an infection, the emotional storyline seeing Kevin's wife taking her own life in the aftermath. The show's producer Stuart Blackburn previously apologised for the error, saying: "I'd like to thank viewers who spotted our mistake. "Our episodes go through many drafts and are scrutinised by many people, but on this occasion we did make a mistake." |

Thank you OnJ
![]() Well, what do I make of this? To some extent I agree that Michael Le Vell didn't try hard enough but on the other hand this might be yet more proof of the chasm that I feel exists between the actors and the production team. I genuinely believe that there exists something of a rift between the two where certain members of the production team have Messiah complexes and cannot be challenged on anything. Let's also not forget that Le Vell has been through a lot over the past couple of years and is still probably wary about 'rocking the boat' with the employers that have been so good to him. |

Very, very interesting! Just done some swatting up and I see that the episode was written by none other than Jonathan Harvey!
He's the top of my Messiah complex list. |

It's so irritating when you point out an error to your employer and it falls on deaf ears! I think it is funny that he was right and has come out and said so! He's been around a long time and should have been listened to.

I suppose there's only so much actors can do - it's not their job at the end of the day. At least he tried.

I read a lot on here about how actors should just refuse to film scenes if there is a mistake but delaying production in such a way would cost thousands of pounds and technically they are hired to perform the lines they are given, not monitor continuity or script quality so technically would be breaking their contract by not just filming it. Think about it, what would the reaction be in a normal job if you refused to do.a task assigned to you - you'd probably face disciplinary action. I person"ly feel that there is an arrogance on the current production team, a belief that viewers are too thick to pay proper attention or remember so that sort of thing just doesn't matter. |

I'm inclined to agree with this, i can well see how Le Vell wouldn't want to keep mentioning it when it was his first big storyline since returning. Even if it were to a jjunior member of staff sho just didn't follow it up, he could have just assumed that it had been and had been discounted.

People are governed by the same rules and the same procedures as the rest of us. I am convinced Michael didn't want to cause a stir. It's true, however, that in the past soap actors did have more say in what their characters did and said, but this was way back in the days of only two episodes per week when there was time for a proper full rehearsal before filming. There are many examples of the likes of Pat Phoenix and Julie Goodyear being very, very vocal and protective over their characters. They would either demand rewrites or, in the case of Pat Phoenix, just make up their own lines! Fastforward to 2015 and there is no rehearsal. Actors have to learn the script a few days beforehand and be expected to perform on cue. |

Corrie needs a fresh production team and to get some new writers and should get rid of a couple of actors like Sean Ward and Antony Cotton. In my opinion as a TV viewer. |

I wish the current production team would be replaced. If I miss any of the other soaps I'm disappointed and try to catch up at the weekend but if I miss Coronation Street I am not overly bothered. If I miss Eastenders I'm disappointed as I hate missing the storylines and I love Emmerdale and Hollyoaks so I always catch up. Please, this isn't a "my soap's better than your soap" as I watch them all but I'm just not loving Corrie right now. I no longer care about Callum now that Max has seen his true colours and doesn't want to see him any more. Callum's now just hanging around like a rotten fart and don't get me started on the appalling Sean Tully (Antony Rotten). I don't find Kirk that amusing any more I'm afraid. I do love Sally and Tim though

Exactly KK - there just isn't the time for that kind of collaborative creative process. Back in the days where there would be read through where writers, actors and directors would all attend, or rehearsals, issues like this could be brought up, discussed and resolved one way or another in an open way without actually halting production (and thus costing money) but those days are long gone.

![]() I wish we knew what their response was at the time. What does 'fell on deaf ears' mean? They must have said something. There's only two things they could've said, either 'you're wrong' or 'you're right but we're leaving it in anyway'. |

Says a lot about the writers and production team to be honest. Slightly pains me Jonathan Harvey was kinda behind it. He used to be a wonderful writer once upon a time. To think the guy who gave us Beautiful thing and Gimme Gimme Gimme is now part of the percentage of the terrible writing from Corrie.

I understand what you and KK are saying, but in this particular instance I don't see what the writers/producers or whoever possibly had to gain by leaving that line in. SB later admitted it was a simple mistake on their part - surely if it had been brought to the attention of anyone other than eg a runner, they would have known immediately that a large portion of the viewers would spot the error and complain?

There's only two things they could've said, either 'you're wrong' or 'you're right but we're leaving it in anyway'. I reckon that whoever was in charge of that shoot made the decision to go ahead with the script as it was for fear of annoying the writer. Let's not forget that it was a location shoot as well so time and costs would have been even tighter than usual. Michael Le Vell probably turned up to the shoot and made the comment about the mistake there and then. Jonathan Harvey is, in my understanding, quite a diva and sees himself as above certain other members of the production team (he's a proper playwright, you know, not a two-bit soap writer). He's well in with Tony Warren and part of the so-called Corrie 'gay mafia'. He's probably someone that people simply don't cross. So, I think that internal politics took over from any kind of desire to get things 'right' for the viewers. If anything, it was brave for Blackburn to admit the mistake. |

Nobody had anything to gain OnJ, people get things wrong every single day and they don't necessarily want to gain anything by it. What they do want to do once they've got something wrong is to cover their backs and refuse anyone actually pointing out that they are wrong. Or, if they find themselves faced with a mistake that someone else had made, many people will try to simply sweep it under the carpet and forget about it rather than cause a bigger issue.

Fell on deaf ears means that the person making the complaint ie Michael wasn't listened to. If you tell someone something and they just won't listen it's like they never heard and you're just wasting your breath and your comments / complaint "fell on deaf ears". It's something I've heard from people in London.

If he knew what she was going through, because he'd been through it too, it would make his treatment of her afterwards very callous and i don't think they want us to view Kevin like that. Also, you'd think there would be more aftermath for him, trauma at remembering Jake and Alison and they probably didn't want to deal with that or have to change multiple scripts to deal with it. I agree it would be interesting to know exactly what the response was, whether Le Vell just heard no more about it, was actually told it didn't matter and how high it got. Bad as a mistake was, blackburn would have looked even worse if he'd said in the press release "we did know, but we just assumed the audience wouldn't remember as we believe you all to have the attention span and intelligence of gnats" |

Lol, I know what the expression means, but I meant what does it mean in this instance? Presumably he's not speaking literally - he means his correction wasn't acted upon, and as I say, he must have got some reply from whomever he spoke to, which could have only been one of two things. Just curious what reply he got.
