The second one came out in 1983 and features Peter Davison on the front. That one is called 'Doctor Who: The Making of a Television Series'.

They were on eBay going cheap, so, as I'm not going to be getting every issue of 'The Complete History', only select ones, I thought, "Why not."

There's also 'A Day with a TV Producer' by Graham Rickard. Although the title doesn't mention Doctor Who, the TV Producer is a certain John Nathan Turner working on Season 18 in 1980.

I used to collect one called The Unexplained. Any else remember that?

Had some HORRIBLE pictures in it as I recall.

The Making of Doctor Who was first published around 1972 featuring John Pertwee on the cover with a Sea Devil. Presumably the 1976 version is an updated edition. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 1972 edition was the first book devoted to factual behind the scenes stuff about Doctor Who. It's still a treasured item in my book collection today.

Behind the scenes books were quite rare in those days. Around the same time I remember "hiding" the one copy of The Making of Star Trek my local WH Smiths had behind other books so I could get some extra money and come back for it. Luckily it was still there when I returned!

The 1976 edition was substantially updated and largely rewritten by Terrance Dicks and it's absolutely fab.

You are right that behind the scenes information on Doctor Who (or indeed any telly) was rare and I read that Making Of... so many times, fascinated by the differences between scripts and scene breakdowns, fascinated by how a TV show was actually recorded, and how a studio worked, fascinated by the synopses of all the stories that had been shown before I was even born. Just a brilliant book.

God yeah, I was terrified of 'Spontaneous Human Combustion' for years after reading that!

I watched the BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens Bleak House last year on DVD. In one scene, Johnny Vegas's character spontaneously combusted. I am weary of that, in case it should ever happen to me one day. God forbid!

Does that one go back to 1963, or does it continue from 1976, where the other one finished?

Quote me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 1983 book goes from The Deadly Assassin in 1976, up to Time-Flight in 1982.

Issue 2 of The Complete History tackles the P'twee stories, Colony, Daemons & Day of...
Much more to my liking given how I was a new born babe when they went out & the location work on Daemons was filmed a few miles away.
If I want any other issues, I rather suspect I shall be making regular raids on Forbidden Planet in London!

They should be available in my local W H Smith store, but if I want to get any of them, I suspect I will need to be quick, otherwise they will sell out.

As I said over three days ago, I will be getting them, but not all of them. Only the ones that cover the 2007 series, plus all of Peter Capaldi's first series.

I've got the DW The Inside Story book, and that covers the making of the first two Modern Who series, so the books that cover the making of the 2007 series, will be a great addition.

With reference to the availability of partworks in the shops, I don't know the policy of other chains or independent newsagents, but I DO know (unless its changed) that WHSmith will usually stock the first half-dozen issues and after that you have to order them and collect each issue from the store.

As to completeing them, I completed both the Clint Eastwood and John Wayne DVD collections. There were 50 movies and 2 documentaries in the Eastwood collection, and 96 movies and 4 documentaries in the Wayne one, including several films that hadn't previously been released on dvd.

One slightly annoying issue with the Clint collection was that the storage boxes you got as part of the subscription held 17 dvds. A quick bit of maths will tell you what the problem was! Also they only posted out two boxes and then at the end of the collection I received a seperate letter and order form to purchase the third box. The boxes for the John Wayne collection each held 15 dvds, which again you will work out meant the final box had space for 5 more discs, which I've now managed to fill with seperate copies of films released on dvd but which weren't included in the collection, such as Hondo, Legend Of The Lost and The Magnificent Showman (or "Circus World", to give it its original US title).
