My remote controller for my Toshiba 40BV700B TV has suddenly stopped working.
I've put new batteries in and did the camera phone test and that is ok.
The tv controls on the set work ok but none of the buttons on the remote do anything.
Any suggestions?
Ray

If you've done the phone-cam test and see the IR LED flashing when you press the remote's buttons then it's not really true to say the remote doesn't work because it sounds like it does. What's happening is that the TV isn't responding to those commands. I know the end result is still the same, but it's more accurate to say that the TV isn't responding rather than the remote isn't working.

If we work on that principle then has anything been added to the room that coincides with the TV playing up. Has anything been put in-front of the TV that might block the receiver? Is the receiver glass clean? Have you tried doing a factory reset on the TV?

Many thanks Chris.
I haven't tried a reset.
I take it I will lose all my settings?
Ray.

Yes, you will lose your settings because the TV will go back to the way it was when you first unboxed it. If there are particular picture settings or configuration settings that you want to save then the sensible thing to do would be to write them down.

I wouldn't have thought doing a factory reset would have any effect for the remote control not working, it's MUCH more likely to be either a faulty remote, or the remote sensor in the TV.

Even more likely is a Christmas card in front of the IR sensor - although perhaps not quite yet?.

Well, given that the remote has fresh batteries and is issuing IR commands as tested with a mobile phone cam then I'd say that the chances of it being the remote are pretty slim.

A reboot of the TV won't fix a faulty IR sensor nor move an errant Christmas card etc, but it is one less possibility eliminated. TVs as with most semi-complex devices are as much software driven now as they are about hardware. So what the hell, give it a shot and then move on to the next possibility. What can it hurt?

You haven't moved a little switch on the remote to 'DVD/VCR' or anything?

No switches on the remote or Christmas cards etc.
Nothing has changed in the last 4 years.

The camera test only proves it's transmitting 'something' - not that it's transmitting the correct signal.

While 'something' means it's probably OK, it's not unknown for them to be transmitting the wrong thing. One fairly common cause of this is the ceramic resonator inside the remote broken, usually due to the remote been dropped.

There seems to be quite a few places selling replacement remotes for about £10.

If you had something useful to say like this then why not just put it in the first post?

Amazon have them for £12 if you finally decide yours is faulty.
