I do think this is unnecessary duplication of what's quite an intensive and time consuming (not least expensive) task. Why can't Apple and Google just work together on some of these things?
Yes, they're in competition on the devices side, but Apple will still buy components from Apple when it suits.
The end user doesn't really gain in the long run.
Indeed, given how many people use Google services (just as many businesses use Microsoft applications and services), trying to keep Google out or forcing their apps to be more restricted than they might otherwise be probably keeps some people from going to iOS.
Nice to see Microsoft back with Apple for the iPad Pro, which shows the direction that should be taken. If I could use all my Google apps, Drive, Maps, Photos and so on with ease on iOS, I'd easily be able to swap and change between Android and iOS.
It's good that some Apple services, like Music, are on Android and I hope this is a sign of the future where common sense kicks in.
