Apple Maps vs Google Maps
I've been using Google Maps since the launch of Apple Maps.. but it's been a few years since then so I was wondering the general consensus and improvement for Apple Maps since it was first released.
Are people still using Google Maps as a replacement, or is Apple Maps just as good these days? |

Apple maps is usually my first port of call unless I need street view.

Thing is, Apple maps is linked to Siri for navigation and just works.
I don't think it's ever let me down. My only issue is that there still aren't enough places in the search. Some tiny rural hamlets are missing. If I go to Google, there they are! |

I have had to put two Apple Maps users right this week - looking for houses that were postcode mapped to being down our farm access tracks. They showed me on the phone, the road names were all wrong too.

I use TomTom on my phone for satnav and often want Streetview when just checking a map so almost always just use Google Maps.

The new public transport information on Apple Maps is handy.

Is it just my phones or does Google Maps directions annoy the hell out of you by showing the map in the wrong orientation for driving/relating to the road...?

Yeah, it's started doing that on walking navigation and is very odd. I can't even set it to point the right way, and the arrow suggests I'm facing the wrong way.
It appears to be a compass issue but it now does it on more than one device (and I know how to calibrate a phone compass) so I'm blaming the app now. |

I suspect integration is the key. Google maps are so integrated with android (although you can of course opt to change the default as always with android) and apple maps are integrated with ios. I suspect that apple users need a reasonable "push" to bother stepping away from the locked default. Originally it was the poor quality of the maps themselves. If that has now improved then most users will simply start using the default, integrated maps as standard. Does apple maps have any features above and beyond the competition ? |

The 3D view provided by Apple is very good, but only available in major cities. If what is being reported is true, it looks like Apple are working on their own version of streetview for the future. |

Apple Maps has improved a lot over time, however for accuracy Google Maps wins easily IMHO.

Yes, they're in competition on the devices side, but Apple will still buy components from Apple when it suits. The end user doesn't really gain in the long run. Indeed, given how many people use Google services (just as many businesses use Microsoft applications and services), trying to keep Google out or forcing their apps to be more restricted than they might otherwise be probably keeps some people from going to iOS. Nice to see Microsoft back with Apple for the iPad Pro, which shows the direction that should be taken. If I could use all my Google apps, Drive, Maps, Photos and so on with ease on iOS, I'd easily be able to swap and change between Android and iOS. It's good that some Apple services, like Music, are on Android and I hope this is a sign of the future where common sense kicks in. |

Google maps for me. But the walking app has problems. Likes others have said it rotates wildly all the time. This has been happening for the last 2 or 3 years on several different phones I used.

I do think this is unnecessary duplication of what's quite an intensive and time consuming (not least expensive) task. Why can't Apple and Google just work together on some of these things?

I'm not sure we will ever know the reasons, but it appeared that Google wanted to change the agreement between themselves and apple (or the other way round) and it didn't seem to suit Apple. Common sense to Apple is to attract people to their devices, Google have a completely different model which is to gather as much data from people as possible. |

I think it was when Steve wanted to go to war with Google, and now I think Tim has different ideas and has realised, just as Microsoft has, that you need to partner with people and work together.
Offering the maximum choice to the end user is the best way of getting them to use your hardware. And for Microsoft, it realises that offering its apps on as many platforms as possible means it can profit even from those that won't buy a Windows PC or phone. |

Used Google for the first time at the weekend. Was very, very good to be honest. Haven't used Apple for a while. That was good too. I think they are both pretty good.
