Becoming a vegan & wearing leather products.

So I've been struggling to eat meat the last few months and the sight of it is turning my stomach.

So I'm seriously thinking of becoming a veggie/vegan but is it considered really hypocritical to wear leather still?

Also any veggies/vegans can you recommend ideas for recipes or website I should go to?

If you go around preaching that it's wrong to kill animals for food and other products then it would be highly hypocritical.

If you're not eating meat because you don't like it then you can call yourself a veggie/vegan or someone who just doesn't eat meat and/or animal products.

Depends on your reasons tbh

If it's because you've gone off meat which you seem to have the that's fair enough, if it's because you think it's cruel to kill animals then you'd be a hypocrite

You can go to Google for recipes and online bookstores for recipe books. I'd suggest making the transition to vegetarianism first and see how that goes. As for the other issue, I suppose you could try to practically minimise the use of such products.

Becoming a veggie/vegan because you have gone off meat doesn't mean you need to avoid leather - as long as you don't decide to preach the virtues of the vegan life.

Leather is just a byproduct of the meat industry - cows and pigs aren't killed to get it.

I'm vegan and don't wear any animal products, including leather, wool and silk.

In terms of recipes, the Happy Herbivore cookbooks are great and relatively cheap.

I can't understand why you need to ask the question. Can't you just decide what you want to do yourself?

It's not really a "Food and Drink" issue is it?
It's a General Discussion topic.
It'll get a bigger response there.

Going Vegan means giving up most beer and wine as well. No eggs, no real cheese NO BACON

A vegan would be more likely to abstain from all animal products, by-product or not. Certainly, no vegan I know would be caught wearing leather.

Maybe try going vegetarian first? I'm vegetarian and there's more leeway in what is acceptable and I'm using it as an 'in' to possibly going vegan later down the line.

Ultimately though it's up to you what you feel comfortable with.

Best not to give yourself a label if you are not planning to be strict about it, you could just say you are trying to follow a vegan diet if anyone asks you. Like others said, as long as you are not being hypocritical or preaching then do as you please!

It's okay to wear leather shoes and clothes as long as you don't eat them.

As a vegan, you could argue that as the animals are going to be killed anyway, it would be far more immoral to throw all the usable by-products away.

That would be a strange argument.

I'm basically vegan, but I do still have clothing/shoes with leather. I understand that people say it's hypocritical, but since I've turned vegan I haven't bought any leather products anymore. I can't suddenly replace everything, so it has to go gradually.
