Our cat Charlie has just had us worried. He was curled up next to my wife on the settee and when she got up she said 'is the cat OK, he looks a bit strange'.
And he did - he was looking around very slowly, with wide eyes as if he was watching something floating. He didn't respond to us calling his name or the usual ch-ch cat noises.
I picked him up and plonked him on his mat but he seemed a bit limp and just flopped down.
After a few worried minutes he returned to normal, had something to eat and played with his toys and he's by my side as I type, completely normal.
We've had two cats previously and not seen this, so we are wondering what on earth it was! Anyone have an idea?

I'd get him to the vet - people here aren't going to be able to diagnose him remotely. It could be an early indication of a serious problem that needs treatment, or it may just be something he ate!

Many thanks. He's bright as a button today, but as it happens he has to visit the vet for his jabs soon, so I'll alert him to this odd behaviour.
Funnily enough we have just started him on some anti-hairball food, so I'll knock that off. Thanks again.

could just be one of those days, the cats been out and eaten a rotten mouse and is paying the price for it and just need a day or so to recover, consider it like us going out and getting bladdered and eating a dodgy meal...the next few days will be rather about recovery

Thanks. Charlie is a house-cat and doesn't go out except into the garden under supervision. I suppose it's possible he has snuffled something up though. We'll watch him carefully.

i remember watching our cats once and one jumped into a fence and came out with a small sparrow dead and was starting to remove its feathers in about 5-10 seconds and they was well fed cats but i guess nature does overide in some points

tbh I wouldnt worry too much, maybe he was just in a really deep sleep and woke up quite suddenly as your wife moved and he was still in "sleep mode"

if he is eating ok and was playing normally after wards and seems ok now maybe he was just having a "moment"

it might be worth just checking with the vet when you take him down but if he is doing ok now I wouldnt worry

do any of his toys have catnip in them? that is a drug for cats so if he plays alot with them he might just have been overly effected by it.........

Yes, we thought that perhaps he had woken in a funny 'mode', perhaps like we get sleep paralysis sometimes. Just a funny turn maybe.
He likes his catnip toys and he sometimes goes crazy after smuzzling them, but he hadn't been using them for a few days.
He loves a whiff of my KALMS, which contain hops and valerian. If I chew them and then breathe on him, he gets very agitated and starts licking my face. Then he starts yawning and has a good wash. Finally he has a 'mad 5 minutes', roaring around the house and wanting to play.
Cats are wonderful creatures, but they are a worry sometimes.

I think valerian has a similar effect on cats to catnip. Though it maybe just the root extract as I have a lot of valerian in my garden and have never noticed cats paying it any attention - unlike the catmint which got rolled on and chomped to death.

The cat didn't find any catnip did it? They can get stoned from that stuff.

Hi Andy2, I was wondering if you ever found out what it was with your cat? My cat has been doing the same and its very worrying. Happened twice over the weekend, so will be taking him to the vets on Monday.
