Is there an app or program that will let me watch freeview on my android tablet? I have the app filmon but that wants £150 a year to watch HD, are there any other options as SD does not look too good on a 10 inch tablet.

Thanks”
Could it be the display which is at fault? I've an iPad mini and my wife has an iPad, and watching TV via iPlayer gives brilliant pictures. I also watch some films via Youtube, and usually the picture quality is very good.

iPlayer will be in HD.
That was my question to the OP: Can he just use iPlayer, ITV Player, All4 etc.

But I doubt whether 1950s b/w films on Youtube would be, and they're very sharp.”
It depends on which version of iplayer you have. When HD is available (720p25) the SD version (576i) is also available. The Android version of iplayer on my Nexus 7 is only SD.

Hang on 720 is SD (dvd quality). Sometimes, Freeview uses lower than SD (576).
Older SD freeview boxes could handle 576 (itv typically) or 720 (bbc typically)

HD is 1080, and only more modern boxes handle HD.”
Conversely, SD TV is defined as not being able to handle 1080 or later standards.
Semantics I guess, as virtually all tvs now are hd compatible or hd ready

SD is based on the old 625 line UHF standard. Which uses about 50 lines for none picture information, hence the 576 figure.
DVD has a horizontal resolution of 720 pixels, is this perhaps what you are thinking of?
