This kid makes me smile. I loved his début on Sunday.

Haven't seen last night's episodes of Corrie though, but I hope Alex is in Corrie for quite a bit.

He's ok, but the actor needs some time to bed in, some of his delivery was a bit forced. I also don't like how he's being painted as some cool, cheeky chappy, little ladies man, just to go against the stereotype of being downs syndrome, it makes him seem a bit of a token character IMO. Some of his lines just sound a bit unnatural.

Yes they are going against the character of a downs syndrome person, making him come out with these silly comments which you can see the actor doesn't understand why he's saying them.
Typical Corrie production, trying to make him fit in with their cast at the expense of working with his own personality and allowing him to be his own person.

They should be more concerned with allowing Alex to become familiar with the audience and letting people who are unfamiliar with downs syndrome people to understand them better by letting Alex be his natural self than turning him into some gimmick to get the sympathy card.

They never do anything how it should be done.

I wonder in time if we find out that we dont know everything about Alexs relationship with Cathy.

Maybe she is Alex's mum, but due to his disability she gave him away, and only knows Cathy as his aunt.

Im going to invest in this character being disabled myself, I just hope they treat him like any other character, and not the token disabled.

This probably wont happen, but I thnk him and Steph would get on well

Actually I know a teenage boy with Down's Syndrome who acts just like that, cheeky little sod who likes to make out he's a hit with the ladies. He definitely understands what he's saying too.

He's one of the best Down's Syndrome actors I've seen - and I've seen a few.

He's very confident and is clearly enjoying his part.

I dont understand why you think he doesn't understand his lines? As I understand it, the actor is an adult and and an experienced actor?

My brother has Down's Syndrome and he is exactly like Alex! A really lovely, cheeky boy

Alex has instantly become my favourite character on Corrie because he reminds me so much of my brother. The only thing I'm dreading is if they do a bullying storyline with him because, to me, that would be unbearable to watch

Seeing the actor who plays Alex, Liam, do so well here... it just makes me happy My brother is a brilliant actor/entertainer and I remain hopeful that he'll get an opportunity like Liam's one day

Same here when I was at college. My ex's sister also had DS. Neither conformed to the stereotypes associated with downs, definitely understood stuff and were incredibly popular with most of the college because you couldn't help but like their personalities.

I think Alex could be a fab permanent addition to the cast. Does anyone know if he is staying around, or was that a guest role?

Yes i found it a bit patronizing. Not his performance bit the writing of the other characters reactions. I think, we the audience, we're meant to be surprised that he had a sense of humour, wanted to go to the Poub for an alcoholic drink etc. Well, I'm not surprised, people with Downs have the same wants and needs as any other adult, they enjoy drinking, they enjoy sex etc. I do,kt need Corrie to educate me on such matters.

Thanks Kitkat you explained that so much more eloquently. I don't find Alex's personality or character surprising or shocking, It was about as subtle as a brick though, the way they shoehorned so many 'cool' traits into one tiny introduction to hammer it all home to us 'ignorant viewers'

Having worked in a special needs school, I can catergorically state that you do get characters just like Alex.

I really like the Alex character too, but wouldn't Kathy have mentioned it to Roy before he met him, that her nephew has downs syndrome, l think that the writers were going for the shock element, trying to catch the audience of guard and for everyone to think oh l didn't see that one coming..

Roy married a transexual... not a lot could suprise him

I am just giving my opinion and in my opinion, though I thought Alex did really well and was clearly enjoying the attention, I thought at times what they made him say was designed to pleased the audience and was going slightly above his head, exactly in the same condescending way that they often treat the children in Corrie. oh and the adults too for that matter.

I have come across downs syndrome folks myself and they are funny but they don't tend to have a sophisticated sense of humour or well developed sarcasm, it's not in their nature, they are uncynical and innocent. Which is a lovely thing.
Which is what I think could be highlighted more.

By the way if you do want to pompously make a statement including the word 'categorically' you will inevitably lessen the dramatic effect through the careless spelling of the snootily intended word in question.
Something worth bearing in mind for future possible slights against others' contrary opinions.

Beg to differ. A lad who works at our community centre is a master of sarcasm. He's also a great comedian and mimic. I dread to think how he mimics me to others.

I absolutely agree, he is great and I am disappointed with the negative comments some people are posting.
