How about a companion who isn't from the UK? Like an american or french or spanish.

She was in her late 30s. She'd be about 45 now, if not a little older.

We had that with Peri. She was American, although Nicola Bryant is British.

Sara Martins, formerly in Death in Paradise would be good.

Who says the next companion has to be a woman?

I'd heartily recommend Jonathan Bailey. Or indeed any other male actor not in work at the moment. Doesn't necessarily have to be someone we know.

I've got a great choice: Emma Hamilton

She's an Australian actress. I saw her in the just released movie "The Last Cab to Darwin" playing an English nurse. The first thing I thought seeing her was how like Sarah Jane Smith she is & if Jenna left, what a great companion she would make, particularly with a Doctor like Peter Capaldi's.

Don't believe me then here's the trailer for the movie:

she'd be perfect!

The most popular companions from New Who appear to be Rose, Donna and River. That shows up in pretty much all the polls I've seen including the big Radio Times polls. So it seems viewers more generally don't mind older or shouty (although I disagree that Donna was shouty). With Rose in top spot, it seems they don't mind a bit of kissy-kissy either.

An American would be a likely choice I would have thought, given the effort the BBC have put into their BBC America brand and the increasing visibility the show seems to have over there. On which note my preferred choice would be Alison Brie (best known for playing Annie Edison on "Community" and Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men") - she's got the range to do comedy and drama and is popular with the sort of obsessive fans who follow these sort of shows (there's a huge crossover between "Community" and "Dr Who" fandom in the States). It won't happen sadly (she seems to be concentrating on her movie career now that both shows have finished) but I still think she'd be a long way the best choice

I'd love a character who's a bit older too. Donna was older, not looking for romance (or, at least, not with the Doctor) and was just as smart as the Doctor in many ways. She just wanted to go off and travel, and leave her boring life behind her. She was certainly worldly enough to feel confident in what she was bringing to the table too, where as I think some of the younger companions remained in awe of the Doctor.

Karen was only about 22 when she started as Amy and Jenna was 25 or 26. I really would like to see someone a bit older next time. Someone like Sheridan Smith (aged 34) or perhaps Julia Sawalha (aged 47) would be lovely.”

BIB: Donna was actually notable in lacking confidence, despite her willingness to fight her corner and argue things out with the Doctor - that was just a front, but she got there as she progressed. She wasn't just a temp from Chiswick. And despite not dying she had one of the most tragic departures. With all memory of her adventures with the Doctor removed (bad enough in itself), she lost most of the confidence she had gained through her time with the Doctor.

I don't really want the companion to be a character we've met before such as Osgood.
I'd much rather the new companion was a totally new character.

Though I like Osgood as a character a lot and as a potential companion, I don't think she'd work as a full time companion unless she lost the fannish aspect of her adoration of the Doctor pretty quickly. I think that aspect of her would rapidly begin to grate on the audience.

So, if she does become a companion, losing that fannish adoration (to be replaced by something more mature, like respect) of the Doctor would be a good opening arc for her character.

I'd love Jonathan Bailey back as Psi again. He'd be a perfect companion.

Alternatively, I'd like a female companion from the past at the start of Series 10 with a male character from the present living in Britain but not actually from Britain introduced in the second half of the series.

I think there's a confidence between self confidence and self esteem. Donna certainly had self esteem issues, in terms of the whole "I'm just a temp" thing.

But I would say she was confident in the way she expected to be treated (by everyone) as the Doctor's equal, holding him to account for his actions and putting her opinions forward.

I can't really argue with that, except to say that I think low self esteem usually goes hand-in-hand with lack of confidence. For me, the whole business of Donna's (some would say) "shouty" and argumentative behaviour, was just a front. One that many of her so-called friends couldn't see beyond, but not the Doctor of course. He could see something worth nurturing in her.

well we don't know for certain she is leaving yet, there were rumours last year and turned out she wasn't leaving. If she is leaving though i'd like to see an alien companion for once, at at least a companion from a different time period other than the present.

Or perhaps we could have someone new rather than just randomly naming old companions? A crazy idea I know .

This is the Doctor Who forum. Leave your sensible head at the door. Crazy ideas are almost obligatory.

She's leaving/left...the only thing that remains is confirmation from the bbc.

There's talk of 2016 being a 'Specials' year. I really hope this isn't true, and if it is then not for the reasons suggested. But at any rate, I don't think Moffat will have more than two more years in him. I don't see him having more than a single more series in him. Even if he has, it's high time to shake things up and it'll be an interesting first for NuWho to deal with a Doctor under two showrunners... if Capaldi is still hoping to stay on of course. I don't feel the showrunner can claim ownership over specific Doctor's. With all this in mind, with Moffat closer to leaving than joining, I do wonder whether an all new companion is worth it. A returning character would allow him to focus on the storytelling in his final series, rather than having to flesh out a main character from scratch all over again. A character like Osgood is a prime candidate for that, and I wouldn't mind seeing her brought on board for a series or two. It'd be a bit like how Donna came back, and that sense of familiarity led to a brilliant series (in my opinion of course). I also like to have a bit of overlap between companions, even if its minimal - all the current companions have met each other to a couple of degrees... (Rose met Martha and Donna, appeared alongside Clara sort of. Martha met Rose and Donna. Donna met Rose, Martha, and River. River met Amy, Rory and Clara. Amy and Rory met Clara in the form of Oswin) and Osgood would fit that bill nicely having already met Clara.

If I was to have a bit more fun with the options, and just go for people I'd like to see in a companion role I'm going with the name I've gone with for absolutely ages as I love her - Gillian Anderson. It'd be great to have two older actors lead the show for a while, though she's a good decade younger than Capaldi still. I'd have to accept that she's not Dana Scully and the ginger hair will probably still be out... but I can live with that

Another I would like in the role of companion is Lucy Brown (who played Claudia Brown in Primeval). I also wouldn't mind (in addition to, or instead of the above) a younger male companion as well - as much as I don't like it, Sherlock has proved they can have a show with two male leads and make it accessible. Maybe someone new or someone familiar (the cyber guy from Time Heist wasn't too bad, as the few younger male characters seem to go) ... but definitely a change from 'British young female' which we've had in excess for years now.”

I would love to see Gillian Anderson in Doctor Who, although I could see her as a villain more I can as the companion. Maybe the next incarnation of Missy?

I agree it would be nice to have a change from the "British young female" formula that the series has become too reliant on. I have long wanted to see an overseas companion in the modern series. A male companion could work too if written well. Somebody like Marty McFly.

I would say it's almost a certainty she is leaving. By the time series 9 is over with she will have done two and a half series which is a lot longer than most of the other modern companions.
