Blimey! Talk about continuity overdose! They didn't just use Benny, they also referenced a ton of other companions including several from Big Finish... it's not just Eight's run that's canon, Six and Seven's are now confirmed too. They also had a Virgin New Adventures character mention an adventure with the Doctor, Sarah Jane, Luke and K9!

On a tangent from the topic of the thread a bit, but it makes me sad that this is something that we'll never see... especially as I feel Tommy Knight has also come a lot further with his acting range as well. I wouldn't object to him turning up with K9 sometime... no need to interfere with Sarah Jane directly, but it'd be a great legacy for The Sarah Jane Adventures to feed something back into Doctor Who. I'd still love a Trickster reappearance too.

Gemma Chan was thinking the same thing, she would be amazing

Is she the actress who was in Humans? If so, then yes, she's really good.

I especially like your summary of 1-4 on that list, and would love to see any of them (again in the case of 1-3). And of course, the tenth and final one seems somewhat like an impossible unlikelihood (all those years of rumoured Rani casting that never came to fruition! ) but will forever be the dream

Laurie Brett.
Yes I mean the one who plays Jane Beale. If she can convince the audience she would actually even be seen with Ian, let alone marry him, then daleks and sontarans should be easy.

Whoever they are, it will be astonishing if they have any desire to stay for even two series if they see what they'll face.

At what point is it normally announced? I'm assuming once this series is over?

Ingrid Oliver or Kate Bracken for me.

Depends most likely on when the next series is going to go out. If Series 10 is to be broadcast to the same template as Series 8 and 9, then it'll be around the time they start filming I suspect - they'll announce it before the actors are seen on set and before one of the newpapers can announce it before the Beeb can themselves.

If there's a chance it's going to leak they may bring forward such an announcement, though with rumours of no full series next year there's always a reasonable possibility that we won't find out who the new companion is until as late as early 2017.

I have said this in another thread but I will say it here too.

I think it could be time for a male companion as it also seems to be female which is no bad thing.

Some of the suggestions on here are good as well

We have an older Doctor for the first time in ages, so how about an older companion too? And, so as not to lose the younger viewers, also a younger companion as well.

I'm thinking of maybe a mother and son combination.
Son - some sort of Hollyoaks-type late teens, not too young.
Mum - 40s, but not interested in the Doctor. More like the Donna / Doctor relationship - if she hadn't already played the TARDIS I'd be suggesting Suranne Jones for this. Or could this finally be the time for Julia Sawalha?”

Well, she already sorta was a DW companion

As for Gemma Chan, she would be another previous character (coming back):

My vote would go to her Humans co-star:

Mind you, there are lots of British actresses who could do a great job and perhaps it is indeed time to cast an "older" actress as the companion (we have had Donna, so this is not something new for the current DW series).

I'd like them to go back to the original idea for Clara and have a Victorian companion. Or maybe one from WW2 or the 20s. Much further back and it becomes too much of a culture shock.

The problem with this is a lot of DW gets set on modern day Earth for the sake of costs and frankly having the entire series on alien worlds or in the past may prove prohibitively expensive.

Seems that Michelle Keegan is turning out to be the bookies' favourite:

Quote:
“Michelle Keegan for Doctor Who? Bookies exterminate all other hopefuls saying ex-Corrie star will appear in show

Michelle Keegan is now favourite to replace Jenna Coleman on Doctor Who, according to bookies.

Following Jenna confirming that she has quit the BBC One programme and filmed her final scenes for the BBC show, it seems the former Corrie actress is in the running to be the next companion.

Bookies Ladbrokes have slashed her odds from 10-1 to as low as 4-1.

"Michelle is just what the Doctor ordered," said Jessica Bridge from Ladbrokes. "As far as the odds are concerned, she'll be entering the Tardos sooner rather than later as his assistant."

"If the punters are right on the money we'll face a bumper payout."”

I just saw that from another paper too, and mentioned it in the spoiler thread. Who knows how likely it is in reality, but I think she could be a good choice if there were any sort of truth to it.

I stand to be corrected but I'm pretty sure the only time we haven't had a female companion was when the legend that is Bernard Cribbins was the companion in David Tennant's last two episodes and the first Tom Baker story after Sarah-Jane left when there was no companion whatsoever.

Female companions are designed to give the young female viewers a character they can identify with. Also, I quite like a bit of eye candy.

”

Adric is the sole companion in Keeper of Traken.

Yes Nyssa is there as well but she doesn't become a companion till the next story.

Turlough and (I think) Jamie started off a story as sole companions but a female companion had joined by the end of the story.

Jaime travelling with the 2nd Doctor in The Two Doctors could also be counted as a sole male companion (the story of course also featured Peri as the Sixth Doctors companion).

I know this should not be a deciding factor but Michelle Keegan has a huge fan following that would almost certainly tune in to watch her in Doctor Who.

Hello Sweeties,

I know your going to really appreciate this comment, so I am getting ready for the flack but you know I would just really LOVE to see 'HELLBOY' as Peter Capaldi's new companion
