Ami Metcalfe, who played the young Kathy Burke in her Sky series "Walking and Talking"

Kathy would be brilliant as her Mum

I just recently watched Last Christmas for the first time since it was shown and thought that Ashley was far better than Shona for companion. Shona is a bit too chavvy...

Aimée-Ffion Edwards

To play a simple, no baggage, no mysterious puzzle to solve everyday earth girl that has adventures with the Doctor. The TARDIS lands... adventure happens... back in the TARDIS and on to the next. It isn't that much to ask for.

I find it odd that after so much criticism of Clara being too confident and cocky and Doctor-esque not to mention having a rather cavalier attitude to travelling in time and space that so many want Osgood. It would be even worse. She is a Doctor obsessive. She will have studied at length. Very little will surprise her and it'll end up being two know it alls trying to out-clever each other. If you want a return to that sense of wonder and magic and adventure it need to be through the eyes of someone like Shona. The last person you want is Osgood. One scientist per Tardis should be a general rule. Same goes for anyone like Psi etc. Apart from being rather dull characters they wont achieve that audience surrogate thing that worked so well with Rose etc.

Not gonna happen.

They'll want an Earthbound female companion on the show.

Ben Hanlin (does Tricked on ITV)
Ray Winstone (is a Doctor Who fan)
Bob Morley (who says the companion should only be British?)
Sean Pertwee (if there's no Season 3 of Gotham)
Dame Helen Mirren
Dame Judi Dench
Kathy Burke

Can't think of anymore.

I've been thinking about how great it would be if it was Dame Helen or Dame Judi... Additionally, how about Joanna Lumley? Ben Whishaw? Anna Chancellor as we know she has some chemistry with Capaldi after "The Hours"

I would very much like Faye Marsay to return as Shona (or even, say, Shona's twin sister Ndebele), but it looks as though that's not going to happen. What about Allison Scagliotti? She's a talented actress in the right sort of age-range (just turned 25), and certainly deserves something better than the stunted infantilism of Warehouse 13.

Gillian Anderson is the only actress I'm currently desperate for. I think her and Capaldi would be amazing.

Iwan Rheon could maybe pull off a male companion quite well.

I've said it before, I'd like to see Romana back - played by Hugh Laurie !

I'd forgotten about Ben Wishaw. Another great actor. He is superb in London Spy by the way.

It would be good if they were a bit "chubby" so when they are running down the corridors, the Dr had to keep going back for him / her.

Or even more Scottish than the Dr, a real tough glaswegian who also has a heart of gold. Comes with their pet cat,

Tho' I'd like it to be another Timelord / lady (Romana?) again.

Haven't watched that yet, really want too as I love Ben Whishaw. Think he'd make an awesome companion. As would some other posters suggestion of Hugh Laurie. That would make a fantastic combo!

Oh, that's a really good idea, I think she's great in The Mimic.

Whishaw is a great actor but he's one of those more likely to guest in an episode than do a series/half of one as a companion.

I agree about a no-baggage companion, but in terms of story structure I don't always want to land>adventure>take off. As you say it isn't too much to ask for, but in a sense that I find it so undemanding that it evokes nothing but indifference from me. I'd maybe like a few stories like that thrown in for good measure, but also enjoy something more substantial going on as well. If the RTD-era format, which was much more land>adventure>take off was still being used now the show would likely have run itself into the ground - it would have become stale and repetitive and nobody would have been asking anything of it, because it would have basically shown the scope of its capabilities.

I'll admit I would enjoy another historical figure kind of story where we learn about someone as we go - even if I happen to know everything about that particular person. But Dickens, Queen Victoria, Agatha Christie, Van Gogh...I wouldn't mind another standalone story about someone famous. Again too many of these makes it stale, but it's been a good few years since we've had a story like this now (discounting Robin Hood).

I like both of your suggestions, particularly Gillian Anderson. I've been waiting for her since forever!

I agree. I wouldn't want the 'land/adventure/bugger off' set up for every episode. I would like to see more of them though, a lot more. I could be wrong but there has only been Under The Lake this series (?) I think this simple approach also helps the episodes that do venture away from this premise as they then become something 'new' rather than the regular. Think of how many classics start with the TARDIS appearing and the Doctor and companion poking their heads around the TARDIS door. Most of the time, the episode is set up with other characters before the TARDIS lands post credits. It's the story in between that makes an episode, that should be where the scope is. This simple premise takes the viewer on the same adventure.(imo) Of course, as you say, it needs mixing up, but I do kind of miss that tune in every week and see where we land approach.

Aye. I'm still waiting for my early Beatles episode

I want to dig out the Dickens episode now you have mentioned it. That's tonight's TV sorted. Ta

Gillian Anderson would be amazing. I would quite like to see an older companion for a change, especially now that we've got an older Doctor.

Iwan Rheon I wouldn't mind seeing either.

Not sure who else I'd like to see, who hasn't been mentioned already.

I love hugh Laurie but can't see him as a companion - think he'd actually be pretty good as the doctor! I'd like to see Psi as the next companion - I thought he was a great character and it would be refreshing to not have another modern day earth girl.

I don't see them doing an older companion. You could argue because Capaldi's an older Doctor, it's more likely for them to keep the companion in their 20s-30s.
