Yes, heaven forbid a man goes to visit his seriously ill grandchild (as far as everyone knows) in the hospital when he's been away for a few days. I agree with you otherwise but Emma didn't "just abandon" her kids at all, she was basically sent away. And the reason she was was something she did because she was mentally unwell. Yes current Emma is a "psycho" character but it's been heavily implied that at the time she was a normal person who was suffering from an acute mental illness.
