I would like to look after someone's pet rat for free/maybe a small charge eg. rat food as I plan to own 2 pet rats myself (I have already bought all the necessary supply eg. cage/toys/bedding/food/etc.) but would like to have the experience (cleaning/playing with it/feeding it etc.) before buying a pair Is there anywhere that I could find someone who needs someone to take care of their pet rat but for free?

I guess it is kind of like a being pet/rat sitter but instead of an exchange for cash its just for the experience? Thought this was an interesting win win situation but I can't seem to find any website that serves as such a platform.

Inexperience vs Experienced

But my take is that even though one maybe inexperienced, as a possible keen future pet rat owner seeking for the experience rather than money, he/she would take care of the pet like their own and be fully dedicated as though taking an exam to see if they would pass to be able to own a pet themselves. To be assure, the inexperienced pet sitter could also update photos daily of the pet and be in constant contact with the owner. I have never used a pet sitter before so I can't say much/be critical about it but I just thought some pet sitters might be looking after a few pets to earn more money so they would not be able to give their whole being to just taking care of 1 pet.

I'll like to hear your thoughts on this if you think this is a good idea or not.. :x thanks!

In terms of making money from rat sitting, it's probably not going to happen. As I've said, there are several rat forums out there, and the communities are quite strong. At least, I have never paid for rat sitting. I do provide all my own food, though (you'll find the majority of rat owners will feed a Shunamite diet, so will want to provide their own food).

You could also contact some local rescues to see if you can come in and spend some time with the rats they have in rescue.

In terms of keeping rats, they are awesome I currently have 2 groups. 1 big group of 10 bucks and a smaller group of 3 females living with 2 neutered males

I have to be honest and say that I don't think I could trust my rats to someone who has never had rats of their own before, especially if I don't know them. If someone I knew was thinking of getting rats for the first time (always rats as they're not happy by themselves) I'd be okay with them visiting and getting to handle them, and I've done that in the past. I've had a couple of people look after my rats before but they were rat owners themselves and I'd known both of them for a while, first meeting them on rat forums and then meeting in person. I'm probably just over-cautious with my rats though

I think it's actually very sensible wanting to have experience of a certain animal before committing yourself and brb's suggestion of contacting rescues is a really good one.

Thanks for the honest reply ! Pets are basically like your baby, so I understand Ah I see... I have yet to join any rat forums, have been trying to find some but they all seem quite inactive and then somehow I found my way here hahah (which isn't all that bad at all !) I'm really new to owning pet rats and sadly don't know of anyone who owns any as well so wasn't sure of how to seek any first hand experiences.

I think forums in general are a bit quiet these days, thanks to the likes of Facebook. If you're on Facebook you could always join some of the rat groups/communities and see if there are people in your area who are rat owners.

If my nearest Scottish SPCA centre was closer I'd like to volunteer to handle and clean out the rats, but it's probably just as well it's a fair bit away because I just know I'd end up coming home with more of the little darlings and the ten I've got just now are a handful as it is
