For some time I've been using the Screen mirror feature from my tablet to watch local videos etc on my tv.
For some reason it has stopped working. I can't find a solution via Google and have been racking my brains trying things to find out why.

1. Moved router
2. checked wifi of TV and tablet are the same

TV = Samsung UE55JU6400
Tablet = Samsung Galaxy Tab4
Tablet = Samsung Galaxy S2

What happens now is when you press 'screen mirroring' it find the TV and says 'connecting' and this little window stays on the screen (of tv).
It sometimes says it's connected and whatever I'm playing, plays but it doiesn't show up on the tv screen.
It used to work flawlessly and I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of.

I have a Chromecast that works although I'm struggling to find something that will let me cast local files without them stuttering.

I've installed various apps that claim to work with chromecast but not had success with them.

Anyone else had a similar problem or know of a fix.

Mirroring doesn't require either a router or Internet WiFi - it's a direct link from tablet/phone to the TV.

Thank you, Nigel.

I'm still having problems with this. My Chromecast needs wifi so perhaps that was causing me confusion.
If as you say the mirroring (which is by far the simplest option) doesn't need wifi, then why does it try to connect and get stuck?

It may or may not use WiFi but the TV still has to establish a connection to your mobile device and vice versa.

According to this

http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/skp/faq/1057791

if the connection isn't established within 2 minutes it should time out on the TV and you need to start again. So if the TV doesn't time out and sticks on connecting that would suggest a fault somewhere.

One thing a bit of googling threw up is a patch to fix screen mirroring after an Android update on mobile devices. I wonder if your device has had an update that has broken screen mirroring and whether the patch would work?

Where I've seen it done it's absolutely simple and instant - if it's not, then you're generally totally stuffed

However, my phone doesn't do it, nor do any of my TV's.

This post is confusing with its wifi and mirror casting references.

Miracasting USES wifi but talks DIRECTLY to dongle (or miracast enabled tv) ie mirrors device screen on tv - this is colloquially termed mirror casting

Chromecasts can also mirror cast (not their main function). They still USE wifi but talk INDIRECTLY to dongle via router. In addition, you need internet access to start things off.

In both cases, mirroring needs device to process the streaming data.

If you play games, mirroring is too slow and the time lag is too great. You need a direct cable connection

Answer to my original problem.

The HDMI ports on the rear of the TV stopped working. They must've had an intermittent fault to begin with and then finally gave up.
I spent time on the phone to Samsung and they talked me through something with the EDID (I have no idea what this is) and reset my telly.
It's all working great now.
