I agree. Even though we pretty much knew, considering they've kept it quiet this long, was there really such a pressing need to have it confirmed that the news couldn't wait another 12 weeks (at most).
Usually when they announce departures in advance, it is so the actor/actress can freely scout for work, but in this case she already had another job lined up, which was already public knowledge so she and itv could have happily talked about and hyped up her new role whilst the doctor who team could have still kept quiet about her status in doctor who. Sure we'd heavily suspect, as most of us have since the news about the victoria role came along, but there is a difference between suspicions which enhance the series because you want to see if you were right, and a confirmed spoiler that a character is definitely 100% leaving and knowing that before the first episode even airs.
Although now it is confirmed, all I can say is whooohoooo!. Bring on a likable companion.
