Well done eastenders
with the lee depression storyline, I suffer from depression and the way they portrayed it was very accurate, the nhs mental health team is very backed up, when you suffer from depression or anxiety you get offered cbt, cognitive behavioural therapy, and it does take u to 2 or three months until your therapy starts, what also was very accurate was the gp's prescribing of an ssri, they hand them out like sweeties because they don't know what else to do, simply because they know the waiting list is huge on mental health therapy, and the only thing that wasn't quite spot on was that the doctor said the pills would take 3 weeks to take effect, that's wrong its six weeks. ive been on every anti depressant available and they don't really work in my experience, tonight showed the tragic reality of having a mental illness and the real lack of help available, obviouslt its a soap and lee will recover but a lot of us don't , I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression at 16 years old, got no therapy just got given drugs and told to get on with it, well when I was 24 my pshychiatrist actually realised that I have innatentive adhd, basically adhd without the hyperactivity. anyway they tried me on stimulants to treat it but its too late, the damage of living my whole life with adhd has taken its toll, so the stimulants like ritakin and dexamphetamine only made me more anxious, still having being given this diagnoses I receive no therapy, just pills and that's it. had I been diagnosed with adhd, a neurological disorder that cant be cured, as a child I might of stood a chance managing my symtoms and feeling like I can cope, but its too late for stimulants u can give those to kids because 5they wont understand what they are, will just see it as medicine, I as a twenty five year old know that taking dexamphetamine every day is going to end very badly. long rant but I feel EastEnders were spot on.

I agree, it's actually uncomfortable to watch because it's so hard hitting and realistic as someone who can relate. It also seems like they're not just going to have him diagnosed and 'fixed' easily and then move on to another storyline. He's struggling to make himself take the medication, which is realistic. It's part of the condition denying you from getting better and also your inner voice saying this shouldn't be happening, I shouldn't be like this. The denial and shame that you've gotten this low. Aunt Babe saying that he just needs to get some exercise was jarring, but of course, realistic, as there's always someone who doesn't understand. I liked how she later came to the realisation that he really was struggling and offered to be there for him.

Anyway, I just thought I would say that from my experience, pills took a beneficial effect on me in about two weeks. I have paid for private and received NHS CBT treatment and it has never really helped. I wish it wasn't the 'in' thing. I have never felt as low as I did yesterday. I am glad that this storyline is making people talk. |

I've worked with lots of depressed clients over the years and a lot of this storyline doesn't feel authentic to me. The being withdrawn is done well, but Lee looks just too neat and tidy for someone who's supposed to be very depressed.
Nearly every depressed client I've dealt with has shown signs of self-neglect and they're never freshly-shaved with a neatly pressed shirt on! |

Plenty of people with depression manage to remain hygienic and presentable. Not that I'm remotely criticising or judging those who can't; obviously depression affects different sufferers in different ways.
