Does BT drop customers speed over time?
At the start I got 68 Mbps then few months later I got new laptop and used a TP-LINK dongle that has USB 3.0 and linked with my laptop USB 3.0 and speeds I got up to was 88,2 Mbps with low as 79.1 Mbps
![]() I then a week ago we got local phone trouble that was posted on BT and after it was fixed and I tested I found that speed was down at 44.6Mbps from my over speeds. Checked my laptop and cleaned files etc. and then looked at my Hub 5a settings and found that 45Mbps was set and so I switched off the hub for around 5 minutes then tested again and got 42.5 Mbps so looked in settings and still at 45Mbps ![]() So I phoned and told them that I was not happy as pay for full speeds with infinity 2 and have youview with BT TV and they sounded like did not care and that speed was great ..... ![]() So told them that I feel that being only 100 yard from the box and 1/2 mile from a BT exchange that the speed I got should be still at around 80Mbps ... then they said OK we can go into the Hub settings and that should give better speeds and after about 5 minutes with music on the phone came back and said that I plug youview back into hub and all other items and that about half hour speed should be around 70Mbps.... Speed has gone up for a time to 48Mbps but now the last test was 40.1Mbps so they haven't fixed it ..... ![]() So tomorrow I will phone again and see if I can get my speed back or I just dump BT ... Is BT network full and they need to drop speeds and do this slowly in hoping that customers do not find out ? Do BT swap out broads at the exchange to save money ? |

I've seen some dubious-looking broads swapping things behind exchanges, but I don't think BT was involved

What was the "local phone trouble"?
A sudden drop in speed is more likely to be due to crosstalk (decreased signal to noise ratio because of noise from adjacent pairs in the same cable - other people's internet connections in this case). Or if your phone line was not working and needed attention, perhaps they've swapped you onto a new pair that has some sort of issue Unfortunately, a fact of life with fibre to the cabinet and another sad indictment of poor decision making on BT's part. Vectoring is a technology that would help (it attempts to cancel out the effects of crosstalk) but BT has not yet switched it on. |

There was one 3 month period when it dropped to about 67Mbps but it then recovered (I think they added another block of connections at the cabinet) and has been back to normal this year, so they don't normally just ignore issues that crop up. |

I have found the speed can drop it shoud be 50meg but when I have done a speed test for about a month it was 45meg but now it's back to 51meg, I think BT have been carrying out work in the area so that might account for the drop in speed I hope it stays at 50meg now. http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ or try this put your BT landline number in this tells you your cabinet & what speed you should have https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Update ...
After second phone call I was taken on a test were all phones and other items switch off or taken away so a phone line could be done and that was all clear I was told even after other on line test that the line had above normal sound db ... Then was past on to another person who did another test on broadband and told me that my service would be sent to broadband team to take a look. Results would be in three days and I should get a phone call and give a time. |

Once in a while I think everyones speed drops a little bit but its not by that much unless theres a problem with the line or broadband.
I was getting just 70mb speeds but have been getting just over 65mb speeds 98% of the time for a good while now. Darren |

So as BT Infinity 1 top speed is 38mps I would get 40 mbps I was told
BT Customers warnings.... I have been told that the Unlimited BT Infinity 2 which was fixed in 2 years at a speed of 60Mbps minim with Youview box, which has dropped to 40Mbps / 48Mbps over the last 2 weeks or more is the best that I can now get and that they will not tell me why I have dropped in speed over time and the Tech on the phone told me I would be better to switch down to BT Infinity 1 for I would get 40 Mbps at cheaper price , so asked to be put thought to have that done and they put me to a person to do that. ( I have about 100 yards of copper wire before going into fibre network box and under half mile walk from a BT exchange so why so low speed now ??? ) On the phone I was told to change my broadband downwards because they Infinity 2 is not fit for uses as only get 8Mbps more then Infinity 1, that I would have pay a fee as I am still in contract ? I asked when did they renew my contract as I never did and he said as you took on the BT Entertainment Max in May you re contracted then. I told him that adverts said it was a free upgrade as BT was changing packages and adding channel to youview and there was no notice to say that you were taking on another years contract as was a thank you for being a customer at that time and they got extra few pounds any way …. So as I have not only got the broadband trouble but my youview box will not record a internet show or season without a block images or a complete record falue I told him then as they are going charge me for the bad service that I am getting, then I would like close all of my package BT phone with free calls all the time, Youview with Entertainment Max with Sky Movies & broadband too. He told OK the price would mean you paying us for dropping the package. I then asked him why he has not said sorry once after I told him all the troubles or even said that he could offer a discount on package or a one of payment to stop me from going to another service like other services can do ? All he said then was that he could give me a new package as new customer which would be cheaper but it would mean a new contract to next September 2016 which has the lower broadband Infinity 1 …... So BT does not care that a service can go lower as they just say it within terms … So BT does not have a department to keep customers happy So BT does not care if you just go …. So I feel after 40 years of being a BT phone customer and two years of Broadband & TV that has always paid my bills in full, I will be gone in May 2016........ Plus as BT has taken over T mobile / EE which I have been a customer for over 25 years I will move from them too as I feel the service and way I have been talk to by some over the week … BT will not have a penny from me again ….. to day by BT.... . |

Ask for a moderator to investigate - they should then post a reply giving you contact details to enable them to look into it for you. The mods over there are BT employees and they are pretty good at sorting things out. |

For Alan
Being a long time customer with BT does not give you any preferential service thesedays, you and I are just accounts on a great big database somewhere in the world.
I've been an employee of said hateful company for 47 years now and carry no more clout or respect than a new employee of a year or so. Don't expect special treatment, it's not going to happen. Regarding your download speeds-- ask yourself if 40meg plus is really necessary for what you use it for. Unless you have teenagers using game consoles on line and a couple of others watching HD film content on line, you'll not need the extra speeds, there is plenty of bandwidth available for your needs. Going with another service provider will just give you the same sort of speeds you have now, maybe a couple of pounds cheaper but is it really worth the hassle. If it's the pricing that concerns you then stop your current contract with BT and start another again with BT, often better deals are listed on BT.COM such Autumn or Winter deals. Good luck pal. |

I also use the BT community forums now and again.
No one ever get the top speed on Infinity if say you are on Infinity 1 up to 38mb speeds you will always get just under 38mb even if the green cab is not far from you. The green cab is just over 2 streets away from me and I get just over 65mb speeds 98% of the time with Infinity 2. 60% of what I do in the house uses Infinity. whether it web surfing, watching BT TV on Youview, Using catch up services and Netflix or now and again listing via TuneIn radio or Spotify. From time to time I also use YouTube. I have even seen me use the Youview app to record to the box if I'm out or in house and don't have the box on or if I just remembered about a programme I want to record. Darren |

Until BT can be rid of crosstalk interference and copper/aluminium twisted pairs, the line speed is always likey to drop over time. Ether the line degrades ( very slowly normally ) or the addition of customers to the service create crosstalk between the lines. Thought vectoring can mitigate this at the cost of extra power usage from constantly processing noise profiles on the lines and trying to cancel most if not all of the noise.
It's likely that the next DSL upgrade (G.fast) will make an actual fiber broadband available on demand a reality. The government should do its bit by dropping the stupid fibre tax. |

Trouble is unless you move to Virgin its BT you will still end up with due to Open Reach a BT company having the monopoly on the cabling and local distribution.

The problem in the UK is who owns it, and how investment decisions are made. An independent Openreach would prevent that - but it would still be a monopoly. I'm still waiting for your magnum opus on how you would solve the UK's broadband problems, but I know you don't do detail Quote:

My speeds have not dropped in the last 4 years but my max attainable has due to crosstalk etc.
From the off it was 130Mbit and these days it is down to 104Mbit. |

When my new package of broadband & youview box was fix into my home they tested my broadband speed at that time and told me that min would be 58Mbps but the HUB 5 would take a week to level out and I got 64Mbps for months then 70Mbps for my infinity2 package .
But now I am suck at 42Mbps to 45 Mbps and being told by BT that it's in the range of speed for infinity 2. Why do some get a lot better speeds yet live at a longer distance from there local fibre networks box and local phone exchange then BT ? So what happened with speed I had then BT ? Why does my hub and test on hub say I have above normal noise on my line which could stop my speed was told, yet BT say my line OK ? I say that this has given me a bad taste for the UK Internet choice in the UK. Is that I and many others will never get better speeds from any of the internet companies like Talk Talk, Plus Net, Sky or BT as it's all using the same network of copper wire phone line then into fibre which goes into local phone exchange, so only choice is price, but that's will depend on phone package and other item like internet TV package .... So the choice I have for internet speed from my home will always be max 45Mbps which ever company I pick ......? Sadly I feel that as customers we have to be armed with knowledge before calling for help and push to get the full service that we signed up these days ... |

You may see some increases if BT ever turns on vectoring (which mostly cancels out the effect of your neighbour's internet connections on your own), or uses pair bonding, or if they roll out the next stage in their "let's spend more money and take longer to do things in a cack handed way" broadband strategy - G.FAST The lucky few got the rolls royce service - fibre to the premises - which is already capable of far greater speeds, has no practical distance issues, and is about as futureproof as it gets. But that seems to be limited to farmers and people whose neighbours are a few miles away, and those who live in town centres and who won BT's postcode lottery |
