I feel sorry for those wanting Anthony Cotton axed
Not really. I find it amusing people expect him to be axed when he has been on the show for 12-years, is obviously popular and none of the producers have dared to get rid of him. May I also note Kieran Roberts was responsible for his introduction back in 2003, and is still working at Corrie so he is going nowhere.
Kate Oates will not have complete control, there will be superior people who will not allow her to get rid of Anthony. Then again, she might not want to get rid of him, it's really just some on here with this outright hatred towards him and believe others feel the same. |

Why on earth would Corrie want to get rid of one of their most popular and endearing characters.

He's not going to get axed. Nor is he going to leave by free will.

She got rid of Val in Emmerdale. She's utterly ruthless. The only one whose safe is Ken Barlow...

I think Antony Cotton is an appalling "actor" and Sean is a terrible, one dimensional stereotype of a character and I'd love to see the back of him. But while my views agree with general opinion on DS, that's not reflective of most viewers. If you dare to criticise Sean on the Corrie Facebook page, it doesn't go down well.
The only characters who seem to be hated by just about everyone are the Nazirs, with Callum and Des Lennis coming in for a lot of criticism as well. But the likes of Sean, Michelle and FIz, all of whom are pretty much loathed on DS, seem pretty popular. Sean is awful but at least he is largely kept in the background with poorly delivered one liners and a bit of pouting. If Antony Cotton is deluded enough to think that makes him a Corrie legend then it has no impact on my life so let him get on with it. I'm much more bothered about stories being focused around dross like Callum to be honest. Sean can ruin a scene, Calum is ruining every episode at the moment. |

In this day and age, where actors come and go, using soap as a platform for higher goals, I think it's silly to get rid of the long standing characters. Yes, Anthony Cotton isn't the best actor, but he serves his purpose. If he was being pushed to the forefront of the show, it would be a problem, but I don't think he is.
Also I think it's absurd that people say 'we want soaps to be inclusive and show gay people... But only certain types' people like Sean exist so why not have characters like him? |

The fact that Cotton is some posters idea of the wrong type of 'Gay' doesn't mean that he ruins scenes
Cotton and Sean are not a stereotype per se. He represents a type of gay man that seems to make gay men and straight men uncomfortable. The gay characters that seem to be popular on this forum tend to be the "Straight acting" sort of gay man, but the type represented by Sean Tully is just as realistic as the alpha-gay. It is nothing short of homophobic to be dismissing him because of his personality type when most characters fit a archetype and always have. Sean has never had a compelling storyline to make him a compelling character but to dismiss him for his perceived campness is quite frankly contemptible in this day and age where one would hope that such schoolyard nastiness would have been confined to the past. Sean Tully is not the problem. |

Is he really that popular?
His chat show got low viewing figures and it emerged that that soap singing competition he won was fixed. |

I think it was obvious that as soon as the news broke that Oates was taking over many of us me included hoped she would axe Cotton.
He is by far the worst actor on the show and I say actor very loosely as he plays himself. |

It does not help that he is a thoroughly unpleasant person in real life.
It doesn't matter what he's really like, maybe Eileen Derbyshire is a swine in reality - doesn't mean they should axe Emily. Also, we know a version of him in real life only unless we know him personally. His appearances on reality TV have been edited to further a story. Maybe he treats his mum like a queen, is generous to his friends and helps abandoned puppys find new homes... who cares? |
