Apparently, when he wasn't being Big Brother, he had some kind of career as an art critic. Who knew!

He is the fourth Celebrity Hijacker to die, after Malcolm McLaren, Peaches Geldof, and Joan Rivers. That one series now has a higher mortality rate than all 33 other Big Brother casts combined.

Here is his episode of Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack on YouTube.

i liked it, because they each had a talent and weren't the typical boring towier, geordie member. most of them had a brain. although it did get very boring towards the end.

He was 84. I didn't think he was that old.

Of course he was based on the FaceJacker character Brian Badonde.

Or was it the other way round.

RIP.

I tend to agree, I was bored rigid with it and it was so obvious who the eventual winner would be.

I didn't enjoy it one iota

Sewell in his autobiography mentions that when he did a television series for Channel Five in France on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the producer thought that it was a good idea to hire a male prostitute for him to keep him company!

Sewell had a very low opinion of TV people, and a low opinion of people in general (it is typical that as he was dying he noticed that his friends were helping themselves to his paintings) but he always kept his sense of humour.

He had an almost religious sense of human weakness, greed, and malice, but found life too absurd to take too seriously.

I loved the eloquent way he roasted that young girl who was studying concept art at university. He put into words what many think but can't express.

And an almost religious belief in his own self importance, arrogant beyond belief, he certainly took himself seriously even if, especially as an art critic, no one else could.............

In other words he had opinions, and loved art more than the art establishment.

He also had intense ignorance and acute myopia.......................

A very good assessment and one I think he might like. RIP Mr Sewell.

Yes, Amy. His second most memorable Big Brother moment.

Leave that video running for his #1 moment shortly after: congratulating Liam on his recent wank.

The BBc don't even acknowledge his Big Brother appearance. Shame.

Legendary housemate, his putdowns was iconic.

I like the comment

'Brian Sewell is currently describing the Pearly Gates as "disappointingly garish".'

and his remark

"All I really want is to wake up and find that every one of my 17 dogs, past and present, is round my bed. Then I shall know that I’m dead, but happily so."

He will always be my hero for his disparagement of Tracey Emin..

On Tracey Emin

“The sane man must ask whether he should give any of this pretentious stuff the time of day in aesthetic terms when it seems that this self-regarding exhibitionist is ignorant, inarticulate, talentless, loutish and now very rich.”

ETA The thread title is wrong on so many levels. Brian Sewell was a very well respected journalist and art critic NOT a one time guest on a Z list programme

I think he was famous for a lot more than that.

No guys I'm pretty sure his participation in an E4 spin-off Big Brother series was his career highlight. He said so himself. "My participation in an E4 spin-off Big Brother series was definitely my career highlight" – Brian Sewell

This is a very sad statistic for what remains my best ever series!

He appeared on that show as an Art critic in an art task when housemates rolled in paint.Amy was star struck by him and will knew he was an artist.

I knew him as an Art Critic only.

Also loved the Fast Show Parody of him.

RIP Brian Sewell.

You haven't lived until you've heard his recitation/rendition of the Beatles' I Want To Be Your Lover. Unfortunately I can't find it on Youtube.

I started a thread on this forum about Malcolm Mclaren to mark his passing but it got merged with the main obit in the Ents section, despite my protests to the mods. Hope this thread doesn't suffer the same fate.

Yes I was sorry to hear this. He was supposed to be a nice guy in person, however brutally he swung his pen.

No I can't find that one either. I suppose you'd found this?
Brian Sewell's Her Majesty

Another plus vote from me for BBCH.

It was a brilliant series with a much more interesting cast than we are used to on the normal BB on CH5. The only problem was the immune to the final idea (later repeated despite the stupidity of it).

I thought everyone knew.
He made many TV appearances when they wanted someone to put something down in a very rude manner.
