Do you think this is a good diet?

So today I had:

3 weetabix with half pint of whole milk

2 bananas
1 glass blueberry fruit juice
50g venison pate + 2 slices of white bread
1 raw carrot

For dinner: Spaghetti carbonara
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves of garlic
40g pancetta
2 eggs
30ml cream
100g spaghetti

2 scoops caramel ice cream with chocolate sauce

1 mug of hot chocolate with:
30ml cream
150ml milk
5g cocoa
10g sugar

A fair amount of fresh fruit and veg and no fast food. However I wonder if it is a bit on the rich side? Do people worry so much about that now or is it all about avoiding sugar?

It's not about avoiding sugar

You shouldn't avoid any macro

Just have a healthy balanced diet

Macro?

Never heard of that.

You could do with more veg in my opinion. I count 1 carrot - hardly "a fair amount"

Seems to be quite a bit of fat in there too. Fat isn't the doom merchant they used to say it was but should still be limited.

True, I usually have one or two portions of veg with dinner but I did say fruit and veg to be fair. And according to the carton the blueberry juice counts as one of the five a day.

There has been talk for a while whether or not juice should be counted in 5 a day. Personally I don't count it - in fact I rarely drink it. I always have at least 3 portions of veg a day - usually more and no more than 3 portions of fruit a day, most of the time 2. Today I have had 5 veg and 2 fruit.

It doesn't seem too bad, though I would replace the whole milk with semi-skimmed or low fat milk. Also is sugar really necessary in hot chocolate? Try instant hot chocolate rather than the stuff you make with hot milk.

Yes, its pretty good, although quite high in dairy fat and also moderately high in added sugar.

What drinks are you drinking?

Just the hot chocolate plus diluted fruit juice. A couple of small glasses of water as well.

Also I should say that I'm trying to put on some weight at the moment. I'll probably cut down a bit once I get up to about 58-59 kilos.

Good for what exactly?

Its not the most nutritious diet but very few people only eat the most nutritious option available. Its fairly balanced and isn't likely to leave you lacking in anything.

Far too much sugar in there and too many Carbs for me.

Instant hot chocolate is that because it already has dried milk and sugar in it. It is not likely to be much better than how the op makes it unless you go for one of the low calorie ones such as Options. At least how the op makes it you can control how much sugar you put in it. For example, Cadburys instant hot chocolates main ingredient is sugar.

I might miss out the cream but I would much prefer to have the odd cup made from scratch than use the instant mixes.

It wouldn't work for me either, hardly any protein, too many simple carbs and too few kcals, but I am around double his bodyweight and don't want diabetes so avoid sugar.

Your drinks seem a bit sugary, and with the added cream, fatty..

Ask yourself why you need to and what kind of weight you want to add. Like Pumping Iron says, that day was low on protein and high in carbs/sugars so you're more likely to put on fat than muscle and they're basically your 2 choices for weight gain. If you're looking to bulk up with muscle, then you really have to combine diet with exercise. Fruit & veg won't necessarily help with weight gain, but combine those with something like rice & beans + lean-ish meat would give you more complex carbs and protein to work with.

I was above 9 stone but slipped below it recently. At my height I figure I need to be at least 9 stone to look like a proper man. I'm getting at least 1g/kg of body weight of protein a day. Well above what is considered necessary.

I agree at that kind of bodyweight you won't require particularly high protein intake to put on weight, I'd go with 1g per lb not per kilo though. Are you doing any resistance work too, or just trying to eat a kcal surplus?

One just needs meat & two veg to look like a proper man..

But check this out-

You could just be an ectomorph! Or that could just be.. veg. But it also contains some math. You are probably fine, unless you're losing weight for no apparent reason, in which case you should see a doctor.

But if you want to bulk up some, then it's a case of doing some exercise along with the diet, and if you're one of those annoying people who can eat lots but not gain weight.. I may have to hate you a little

Fruit juices have vitamins, but beyond that they aren't much different than drinking a soda.

It seems like there's quite a lot of fat and sugar, and not much in the way of whole grains / fiber. I would get more veg in and trade out the breads / pasta with whole grain.

If you're interested, there are sites like https://cronometer.com/ where you can input the food you eat and see the nutritional break down.
