Exterminate - the Doctor came up with that phrase then?

Just rewatched the episode and it's quite possible that the Doctor came up with the phrase 'Exterminate' for the daleks. He says it to Davros at the very end - whether he actually kills him or the hand mines we'll find out next week, but Davros has now heard the word exterminate, which could stick around until he creates the Daleks.

What does everyone else think?

That is the clear implication, yes.

Tbh, I wish Moffat would stop fingering the show's past and just tell a bunch of stories.

But he only used the word because the Daleks use it who only use it because the Doctor said it to Davros, so nobody came up with it, it just is...

well it would be one of those moments of irony if we see Davros repeating the word to himself at the end , but then if that's the case I'm surprised they've signalled it in a preview .

The dalek weapons are voice controlled.

It's only been 1 episode. Tbh that is why doctor who IS STILL on tv. Because of continued references and recurrences to the past

I don't think that's necessarily the reason why it's persisted, but its not an inherently bad thing to do either. I wasn't fond of the "Listen" flashback myself, but this Davros one seems good so far. As long as they don't go the route where the Doctor caused the creation of the Daleks. And even then, you can view it as, "The Daleks always came to be, the Doctor just replaced their original creation with his involvement when he changed time. Like how he did in Last Christmas."

Being honest I didn't notice that. But thanks for bringing it to my attention. It sounds like a very reasonable point and you are probably right.

I've thought that myself, and you could also imagine the way the doctor is acting (purely on hate) could be further inspiration for the daleks......BUT, it seems to me that the only way the story will make sense is if young davros has his memory erased of his interaction with the doctor. Not only is that what I assumed the whole 'davros remembers' thing was about (he had his memory wiped but now somehow remembers) but also, if they don't show that he had a memory wipe, then we are left with the rather unbelievable idea that he had the knowledge of this tramuatic childhood event all his life, and only now, after all this time and all his interactions with the doctor just suddenly realised it was the doctor despite being given the sonic and seeing the TARDIS at the time.

If his memory isn't wiped then I can't see any way they can explain it that would sound credible.

Couple of reasons he may not have known it was the Doctor - it was foggy, he may not have seen the detail of the Tardis, he may have just seen a big thing in the background. Also the sonic screwdriver is different, it's from Matt Smith's era to Peter, so he may not have associated it with the Doctor.

Just like us, if he could see the doctor, he could see the TARDIS, plus the sonic is just the same device in a different casing. Davros being a scientist, it wouldn't take him long to work that out.

In talking about this subject people keep only seeming to think about the two Capaldi interactions with davros (young and old) and forget all the many interactions and long history they had between the two. Davros is a Genius, and after how familiar he has been with the doctor for years, he would have realised long ago that it was the doctor, and if part 2 just expects us to believe that he didn't somehow realise in all those years then it will diminish the character and really stretch the believability of the storyline as a whole.

As far as I can see, there are only two good explanations. One being that young davros simply had a memory wipe, or two, another good explantion I've heard on other threads since I last posted on this one is that that Davros realised that it was the doctor years ago but couldn't or didn't need to do anything about it until the doctor was in the right incarnation that he remembered him being in, as it was only then that the doctor had dealings with his past.

The davros knew but only chose to act now might be better because then you can keep things like the doctor saying exterminate being an inspiration for davros. The only slight niggle with that option though is that it means believing that in every episode ever, davros would have always secretly known that the doctor would survive, because he hadn't reached that face yet.

In "Genesis of the Daleks" the Thals and Kaleds both used the word, though. I think it's just a commonly used word on Skaro.
