My first thought when reading the title of this thread was Cliff Richard but he has been mentioned few times,he is actually at number 3 at the moment in the midweek album charts.

Madness & Frankie Valli were the others I thought of

There are rumours of a new Rolling Stones album in the works, their first all entirely new record in 10 years (they're done some re-releases with extras added on) and it'll probably sell well enough. That would make it a chart career spanning 60 decades.

This is probably true although I think you mean 6 decades. I remember The Stones from the 60s and 70s and for me the later recordings are not in the same class as the early works despite the sales. For me there are a few artists like Springsteen or U2 or Miles Davis ( or Kate Bush, mentioned briefly above)) who have been able to create great new works throughout their career. Maybe there should be a special prize for these kinds of artists?

Yeah, don't know how I made that typo. Even Mick and Keith aren't that old. I think it's hard for those guys to really write songs as great as they used to because the band were so emblematic of their time and place. They're rich old guys divorced from that now. In saying that, Keith's new album has some excellent moments. Another point in their favour is that they were able to reinvent themselves and have three distinct and excellent eras - the 60s pop breakthrough, the Golden Era 1968-72 when the songs, the image, the lifestyle and the live shows combined to create magic and the Silver Era with Some Girls seeing them taking on the challenges of punk, disco and new wave.

I would agree on Miles Davis and Springsteen regarding quality over many years and maybe would add Bob Dylan into that discussion but I think U2 have been trading on musical and lyrical cliche for a long time now.

Indeed, and new material all the way - apart from the odd re-recording.

Kate also writes, unlike a lot of other singers.

Some singers have had the odd hit over ten years, but you can't say they've had great staying power. Britney Spears has been around for about 15 years, but she's a hot mess.

Michael Jackson had hits in the 60s,70s,80-s,90s,00s and 10s if you include the Jackson5 and the posthumous releases.

If this is just about pop/rock then the best candidate would be Little Richard: 1950s to the early 2010s = seven decades. He's still going...

I saw an awesome documentary about the origins of Rock and Roll and Jerry Lee Lewis did an interview for it. He can barely string a sentence together any more. It was kinda sad actually.

I'd see it as fairly normal that genuinely talented and creative artists, with the ongoing support of a record label (or labels), would have careers of easily more than just a decade.

Personally, I don't rate the importance of singles chart placings as they are no measure of the quality of a musician's output.

maybe not, but they always were the 'shop window' where artists displayed what they were about. probably not these days though, i dunno, i cant claim to be in touch as much as i used to be.

lets face it, very few 'quality' tracks (innovative, intelligently and originally composed ) made the top placings of the singles charts but were released and did advertise the artists style.

Blondie (including lead singer Debbie Harry).
Had their first of many UK number 1 singles in 1979 with "Heart of Glass" and their most recent UK number 1 single in 1999 with "Maria". A 20-years gap between number 1 UK singles.

They nailed Glastonbury in 2014 and continue to tour.
What a band!

Eric Clapton
Performing in major bands and solo (1963-present). Not the pop chart success you might expect but he has a phenomonal live following (including me) and major sales of albums.
