The comment made on tonight's show, where James said that if anyone in the house has Austin's back, it's him.

When?

Austin has been involved in many arguments over the days in the house, but I don't remember James ever intervening on his friend's behalf.

It seems that whenever something goes down, James takes a very distant and calculating approach, before later on sitting someone down for one of his one-on-one chats, that often sound as if he's talking over their heads to the cameras, rather than actually talking to the person.

Well if the suspicions about nominations are correct, James has had Austin's back alright

.... then stabbed him in it

That's a good observation

It's like he thinks he's still on The Apprentice and is 'making his pitch' directly to the public

I don't think you necessarily have to involve yourself in someone else's argument to have their back. Just support them and comfort them when they've needed it. So to a certain extent James has had Austin's back. However, in the past few days I don't think he's always supported him as much as he could have. They've both been dickish to each other on both sides, but James not criticising Janice for what she did was a bit of a betrayal. It wouldn't have killed him. Ultimately Austin wasn't having the best day.

Funnily enough though, back at the beginning, the two rows James got into with Farrah, had Austin standing up for him. He didn't seem to mind Austin's behaviour then.

Let's not start that again. He cuddles his back every night in a normal brotherly way. Apparently all men do that who aren't repressed

James has been trying over and over to stop Austin acting like an aggressive fool.

He failed, but it does show he cared about Austin.

Austin only listens to himself and Jenna though, fool that he is.

By telling him when he is being a dick and getting him to apologise for bad behavior is having someone's back, as the psyche said the other night, Austin thinks being a friend is supporting everything your friend does even when they are being out of order but James is being a friend by telling him he is out of order. if you support someone's bad behavior they become worse, so I think James has been a really good friend by sitting him down calmly and being honest with him about the way he is acting. Janice was pathetic leaving so soon, but you can be pissed off with something with out calling them the c word, I think that is what james has done for him. I think he has just realized that it is just to hard work to be Austin's friend now and wants to distance himself.

Why does Austin expect James, or anyone else for that matter, to have his back?

Because James keeps saying he has?

Oh Lordy don't give them ideas Sulla. The producers have exhausted just about every other mechanism for stirring up ill feeling. The only thing they haven't yet tried is throwing in firearms.
