Comedy duo John and Ellis from XFM Saturday mornings have transferred to Radio X in the same time slot.

Musically similar to XFM but be very clear this is not XFM and is aiming for a much broader audience who want a mix of chat and fresh rock and guitar based music. It's no longer just focused on the niche indie music fans.

The station has also grown from being a local station in London, Manchester and Glasgow to being a fully national station on the UK's number 1 commercial DAB multiplex Digital 1. One downside is a lack of investment by Global radio (or maybe due to paying its new starts too much) it has been unable to afford a stereo slot so is only available on DAB in mono. You can still pick up Radio X in full blown two channel stereo in FM (London and Manchester only), online and via TV (Sky/Virgin).

Just to be clear Chris Moyles is not and never has been on XFM.”

Please stop going on about Radio X not being in stereo. There really are much, much more interesting things in life to go on about.

Is Moyles going to get axed again because his audience is too old and doesn't meet the OFCOM age target, sounds like Radio 1 all over again, I bet Moyles thought he'd left that all behind at the BBC.

What is the Radio industries obsession with age? All other entertainment sectors (Movies, TV, Gaming, Music, Sport) just focus on bums on seats not narrow demographics why is Radio different. If you have a huge audience that's all that matters age shouldn't be a factor.”

I think the format is their 'core target audience' but in real life they'll want to have a broad appeal in terms of getting the bums on seats.

You are right about an obsession with age. It's an arbitrary number really, but you can easily say Moyle's would have appeal to either of those age ranges, so he should be fine.

It's not particularly hard to get formats amended these days anyway.

Moyles's problem at the BBC was that R1 is the nations public service youth broadcaster. It's core demo was much narrower and there was much less wriggle room.

That said its a nonsense that you can't have appeal to a youth audience because you are not in that group.. But its how Ben Cooper seems to think so hey-ho.

And a station with infinitely more personality and interesting music than XFM had.

You obviously haven't listened to John Kennedy's show, or the old Remix show. Loads of stuff gets played by Kennedy that doesn't elsewhere. Yes there is some playlist material but he does know his music.

And personally, I think it's good that Radio X don't play Adele and the like. If I wanted to listen their music I'd listen to Heart or Capital.

Does anyone know why the remix show was dropped I know Eddie temple morris quit. I never heard it but it sounded really good from the description "where dance rocks" remixes of indie rock tracks and up and coming dance rock indie crossover tracks. Mixes from djs etc.

It's been going on for years on these forums, the same old moaners complaining about mono. It's bores the living day life out of me.... Nearly every radio station thread you get the saddo mono moaners complaining.

Mono vs Stereo is probably off-topic for this thread (holds up hands for getting into it).

But, different things matter to different people. You seem to be happy with mono on music based stations and that's fine. Its a personal preference.

Personally, the endless good vs evil debate on the existence of the BBC over on the DS Broadcasting forum bores the hell out of me... so I don't go in there and moan about how boring it is. They enjoy it or have passionate views about it so I skip over it.

It is a discussion forum after all - lets not shut down discussion.

Kennedy is one of, I think, only 2 of the survivors (possibly Camfield?) from the days Xfm was a genuinely fresh, groundbreaking music station before it was taken over by the Global robots. His show was one of the mechanisms by which GCAP kept the licence following the protests by listeners to the original station, furious at it's blandout by the Corporate Suits.

I suspect many on here are too young to remember the original station. It got off to a shaky start (was, I confess, probably too adventurous) but just as it was finding it's feet and audience, certain traitorous members of the board (Sammy Jacobs mainly) succumbed to the GCAP chequebook and the rest is history.

I was part of a group who bombarded the Radio Authority with complaints (who, incredibly, asked us to do a monitoring of the entire output, logging every track we thought contravened the licence stipulation) and who organised a demonstration outside the Leicester Sq HQ. We got a good turnout, it was noisy, angry, and the muppets inside nearly wet themselves. They closed the Capital Cafe (long defunct), and erected barriers all around. I seem to recall a brick going through a window, but it wasn't heavy. Got us nowhere of course, but great fun. I still have a copy of the following week's NME, which covered the story complete with a photo of me going mental leading the chanting

So please, no lectures about Cap-Xfm's breaking of new music. They did the very bare minimum they could to save the licence. And now they've got it where they always wanted it - a watered down version of Absolute.

Thank GOD for the BBC.

Calling them traitors is a bit much. After all it was their money that they were risking on a business venture. They got jitters as a result of a shakey start and sold up when offered a way out.

Radio is a business with real money and real risks. I don't like bland, corporate mush either. But you have to be realistic. If it couldn't wipe its feet financially then it has to evolve or it will die. Xfm evolved (several times), NME radio (sadly) died.

It's hardly Absolute is it? Absolute played Queen, Dire Straits, Credence Clearwater Revial and Crowded House during the few brief periods I tuned in at the weekend, so very different artists to those you'd hear on Radio X.

I did enjoy the segway of Lithium by Nirvana into Bicycle Race by Queen, now if Radio X was that eclectic it might be a more enjoyable listen musically.

Bit of a slap dash 30 mins by Moyles today although with the amount of LBC imaging I wonder if some people are getting a little confused with things.

Dave has been exceptionally quiet.

I'm done with it. Stayed as long as I could but it's seriously dull. Everything is dragged out until you can hear the blood pouring out of the punchlines ears.

Nobody seems to have control over Chris.

I kind of know what you mean.

The amount of repeated material. The amount of stuff that's just dragged on. The amount of in jokes. 5 minutes this morning talking about why the news jingle messed up. Chris has always been able to make this sort of thing relatable... but 5 minutes worth? Yawn.

On R1 I think Aled/Rachel has a great relationship with Chris and a great ability to control him (as a good producer should) - I'm not sure Pippa/Dave have that yet.

THAT SAID, it's still the best breakfast show on the radio by a million miles. (which may say a lot about the state of radio right now).

Try it again in the new year, I have a feeling this is a bit of a soft launch (try out ideas) and they will do another ad campaign and make its stereo on DAB in the new year, fingers crossed.

I think the ads are becoming more frequent spoiling the flow of the show.

Id make the show bigger get another team member and up the production sounds a bit lite at the moment, not enough beds/jingles, throw more money at it. Don't rely so heavily on competitions create new features. Stop trailing the FB videos so much and focus on the radio aspect

Did laugh at the Cock Block Party bit. Chris sounding a bit tired break over Christmas will do the show good.

Listening to Chris Moyles at the moment is like seeing someone that you knew 10 years ago doing the same material in a holiday camp 10 years later.

Hard core fans are there, with their Chris Moyles Radio 1 Tee-shirts on, drinking out of their Chris Moyles Mugs, singing the old jingles.

Meanwhile Chris drags the same old jokes around the stage with a look in his eyes of a madman, whilst 3 people, scared to question his motives, watch him devour the carcass of someone that tried to control him.

The minute the first show started with the cheesy jingle tease my heart sank as I knew where this was going, then when it happened again the next day it sank further, by the time I had heard Rob DJ, Andi Peters and 30 minute links my heart was in my boots.

He is better than all of this in my opinion, but that is just my opinion, I can change station, and I have. I'm disappointed that someone I looked up to in 1997, through to around 2006 has not taken the opportunity.

Tomorrows listening was decided for me when he announced that the knobhead known as Bono was on the show. Judging by the eulogy Chris gave him this morning it will be a painful arse licking session.

A bare twelve months is hardly staying the course, and it's RAJAR was improving at just the time Jacobs lost his bottle. I said from the start it was too hard to listen too, needed to have more entertaining entertainers, and to wind-in the uber-indie policy just a tad. That was precisely what was happening when Capital kicked the tables over.

God, Geldof in the mornings! Park couldn't understand the fuss. "There will be no Tellytubbies on Xfm" he said, somehow imagining this was appropriate. What a automaton the man is.

Some of us had been waiting a lifetime for that radio station.

Anyhow, pleased to hear Moyles is being a resounding success . Global has made sloppy seconds an artform.

This is the thing, saying he sounds tired 5 weeks into a new show is not what you want!

I would dearly love to speak to Dave and just say "What's happening? You sounded so in control with Jon but here things seem to have changed"

Star struck I think. Moyle's absence has lead to his reputation being enhanced. Such a fuss was made of his return that he seems to be in total control - I am not sure whether he wants to be, it might just be the others being in awe.
