I've always felt that the best DJs are the ones who are massive geeks but realise the average listener isn't.

Problem is, that is what Chris Moyles can only fall back on and used to do it a lot in the R1 days. The whole stories of other presenters/assistants is hugely disrupted by ads/competitions. We can't get to know other producers more closely and it seems Global want to keep Chris' show and the rest of the station apart.

Yeah, it feels like that criticism of Radio 1 in the pre-Bannister days, that all the individual shows were just that. Like their own little radio stations.

One of the good things about Radio 1 when Moyles was on was that they used him to get the specialist DJs over to Moyles' listeners - during the marathon he was on with the whole lot, he did soundclashes with Zane Lowe. That sort of thing matters - I remember listening to Mark Radcliffe for the first time because Chris Evans, on the Radio 1 breakfast show, said he was good and we should give him a shot. Even if someone doesn't listen, it makes the whole station sound like more of a ... well ... station, rather than a place Chris Moyles just happens to be which plays music I don't like.

I agree with this also, the show feels too small, which to viewers coming from Radio 1 is particularly notable.

I've drifted back to Radio 1/Capital, as I didn't like the music, felt like I was missing out on the latest new releases and it all just feels too small.

Chris is trying to generate a feeling of being part of a bigger thing, by mentioning the other Global stations, but unlike being part of the big BBC machine, he's talking about tin pot digital stations in the next studio, who nobody cares about.

I'm wondering whether Chris Moyles will return after this 4 week break he's having, I know the rest of the team are about for some of this period, the Rajars have not not given him the boost he needs, Chris was probably thinking when he signed up that when he had 8 million at R1 listening that at least half of them would find the show, with the figures coming out at less than a million is it going to be worth it to carry on.

Moyles should of waited just that bit longer and signed with Virgin a known brand unlike Radio X and a bigger playlist than the tight playlist he seems to have. Hope he doesn't leave and returns in Sept and the show is given a much needed boost by management.

I don't think theres any fear of him coming back. The Rajar's aren't as big as Radio 1 but there was never any hope of it - it's a brand new station that still needs to embed itself.

I'm sure he, and Global, would have loved a bigger figure - but I don't think their result is anywhere near bad enough to mean he'd want to, or be made to, go anywhere!

Why everyone got the impression that he will be leaving after his 4 week break, he not leaving he said on today's show he will be back at the begging of September.

If he was leaving why would 2 of the 4 weeks he's off be his best ofs?

4 weeks off is a long time; he seems to have a lot of holiday built into the show! Today was interesting with just him and Dave especially if it is the last 'live' show for a while.

I listen when I can, but the biggest issue is not being nationally available via FM.
Have a DAB radio at home but in the car I use the app and fm transmitter, but that only works if there's a reliable network signal.
As the car is my work office I usually end up switching off between 8-8:30.
If it wasn't for the podcast I'd miss a lot more of the show than I normally do.

In the Radio 1 days he'd usually have 2 weeks off Christmas (sometimes 3 depending on how the dates fell), Easter, Summer and 1 or 2 in October with occasional extras due to working on other BBC projects

I wonder what's happened as to why he needs 4 weeks (family reasons?) or filming or just a long break so they can have a holiday and work on new content?

The thought had crossed my mind, but I’m sure he’ll be back in September. His ratings aren’t as high as everyone was expecting (and I’m sure that includes himself and Global), but they aren’t disastrous by any means... just disappointing.

As for waiting and going to Virgin... I disagree. Yes, Virgin is an established ‘name’ but it doesn’t have any FM presence... anywhere. So his ratings would without a doubt have been much lower, and his show simply unknown to most. I do agree that he would hugely benefit from a playlist that wasn’t so restrictive though. I’d echo all the comments about maybe joining Radio 2 in the next few years being a good move for him.


I think you’re reading too much into it. He just had a number of years off work and probably enjoyed the freedom it gave him. And not having to get up at 5am every morning. When negotiating his contract he was in a very strong position, and he took advantage of that. Why not? I’m sure we all would if we could. I know he likes to spend so time in LA, so my guess is he’s just enjoying a long holiday - and again, I would if I could (I spent the summer in LA two years ago and would love to be in a position to do likewise every year).

That's my point if he was leaving the Radio X schedule, website and social media feeds would be cleared of all mention of him they haven't been so he's still on.

I recall him stating he was on a 2 year contract with the option of a 3rd, so he has another year and then I guess a decision will be made by both parties as to whether he stays longer.

Don't see that his figures are bad enough for him not to be given 2 years to make it work.

I still enjoy the show the first hour today was very geeky though, 6:30-7 on the Global quarterly business review which he attended and then the 2nd half hour was yet another interview with the most popular UK radio presenter in the 4am slot, mainly discussing the food items he keeps in the boot of his Rolls Royce!

Yes because it will be his first anniversary on September 21 st radio X first birthday, so his contract must expire in September 2017.

Has XFM ever reviewed its format agreement? Dropping the' rock' out of 'indie and alternative rock' could help them aiming towards the Virgin / radio 6 market. The listenership drop I believe is down to its music restrictions, which no doubt could convince Ofcom to agree an amendment.

Slightly different tangent then...in their time they had the two biggest shows on the two biggest stations in the UK. If it ended up as Moyles vs Evans for R2 Breakfast, who would do the better show and who would pull the biggest audience?

I know who my money would be on ------ and it wouldn't be Moyles.

With the right team around him Moyles could easily do the Radio 2 breakfast show. These past few months on Radio X the show has felt flat, back last September we had features like inappropriate tracks, which allowed Chris to have some fun with the music, this is where the Platinum hour works on a Friday, If they could play more of the music like that then it would work.

On a side note Why not put the excellent sounding Rich Walters on when Chris is off, he sounds great on early's Vernon Kay gets thumbs down from me and sadly to say I will not be listening to Radio x at breakfast for the next 4 weeks, which is the only time I listen to the station.

Have to agree - Vernon used to be a great listen on R1 weekends but I'm really not a fan of him on X and I can't put my finger on why?!

It's weird; i always said during his R1 days that, love or hate the content of his show, Chris was an absolute technical master who could operate a studio like nobody else. He doesn't seem to get on with the Global studios as well though!

Two things.

1) Radio X are consciously choosing to use their current playlist. It was much broader even as recently as Andy Ashton's second spell (around 2011 I think?) when they were playlisting the likes of Sleigh Bells and Nero in daytime. They could switch to a broader alternative offering if they wanted - truth is they've moved more to guitars since the rebrand.

2) Who the hell are you crazies talking about Rich Walters for breakfast? Surefire way to lose listeners through a combination of them switching off and also shooting themselves in the head. Do agree on Vernon though, I think he'll be the first to go.

Putting a 'Best of show' on for 2 weeks at breakfast is poor and lazy, it will be bad enough when they do it at Christmas. You want and need a live show at least at that time of day (even Gold has a live breakfast show).

What if some big story broke over night or a musician died, Back at the beginning of the year David Bowies death broke just before the 7am new on Chris's show meant that he could talk about it and play some of his tracks. It.

Putting a "best of show" on for as long as two weeks is very lazy indeed, certainly outside of the quiet Christmas / New year week. And it seems to suggest that the Radio X management have little faith in the other presenters that they have. Some of those weekend presenters that used to be on XFM during the week must just be seeing out their contracts if none of them are being used as weekday cover for holidaying presenters.
