The issue for me is not the fact Moyles has had several weeks off - I've always said that if you throw yourself into your job when you're on and you're delivering then when you're off you are off, and for some time. It's perfectly healthy and allows a recharging of the batteries, if it's possible to allow it.
I've no sympathy for people getting bashed back at by Moyles - a lot of people are Twitter warriors who decide to send snark and then clutch their pearls when someone takes them on. If you can't take it don't dish it out. I do think it's counter-productive for someone likes Moyles to get involved in Twitter rows, but I don't blame him for doing so.
I do think a 'best of' for a national breakfast show is a really, really bad idea however. It makes the station sound tinpot, and it doesn't need to be like that because there are presenters there who could hold the fort in the interim. It seems bizarre that Johnny Vaughan hasn't been on breakfast in this time, for example. Problem is, a lot of Radio X feels like people are listening for individual shows and then going away. Moyles fans listen for him, Vaughan fans listen for him, the old-school XFM fans tune in for specialist shows and so forth. So if Moyles is off, his fans may go somewhere else - and not come back.
It is very early days but it still doesn't feel like a coherent station. The knack to this is how long Global wants to give it, and how the figures go. You can imagine it'll end up naturally evolving in one direction or another eventually, whether to Radio Bloke with Vaughan at breakfast or a station which feels more suited to Moyles' style.
