People can complain all they like about adverts and the playlist, but I'll happily sit through Johnny Vaughn and Frank Skinner's shows despite the ads and music that I don't especially like because I know they'll make me laugh. Moyles may be a technically great broadcaster, but when he's left to come up with all the ideas for the show on his own, he just isn't that funny.”
This is something I was thinking about last week when Johnny was on. All three of that team are witty broadcasters who can hold their own. Sunta and Gav add a lot to the show in the same way that Richie and Matt do on Absolute, or Comedy Dave did on Radio 1.
With the current Moyles show, I agree with Valentine that Dom has come across as a sycophant. I'm sure he's a great guy and he owes a lot to Moyles - he's probably on quite a healthy salary again and didn't seem to last long on either Capital or LBC without him. But it almost makes for uncomfortable listening when nobody challenges Moyles.
Pippa is great, but was never on-air for Greg James or Moyles before, and I'm sure she'd admit she's not a natural broadcaster. As for Dave, I've always liked him but he was the foil for Dave Berry, Danny Wallace, John Holmes. He never took as much of a role on air.
The end result is that Moyles is carrying most of the show, and pretty much allowed to run wild at times. You might argue he likes being the main man - as evidenced by the shows where he's had the other three do their own links. I'd imagine he would never have done that with Comedy Dave, for example, because he would probably have held his own.
Anyway, it was straight back to Absolute today (albeit a much less amusing listen than JV last week).
