Apple has removed some Chinese apps from the App Store that were infected with malware. You'll have to read the link as I'm just going into a meeting.

BBC News seems to be saying is just the Chinese App Store.

Apple do vet all App Store submissions quite carefully and the one you had issues with may well have had some other problem.

Some Chinese developers were using a hacked development tool to produce apps. This allowed malicious code to sneak in,

I don't have iOS yet (Friday!) but my understanding was it was Chinese developed apps, not the chinese app store... apps like wechat available in the UK for example??

It is kind of weird that they are describing genuine developers having malware alter their software.

It stands to reason that the vast majority of malware will be specially written specially for IOS, the same how it can happen on other platforms. I guess by infecting they easier manage to find a bigger audience.

Any affected apps have been removed from the App Store, so you could check that way.

A bit vaguely written, but it infers WeChat, WinZip, Mercury Browser and Musical.ly were infected apps.

It's whoever downloaded XCode from the Chinese server. Not sure if they allow downloads from abroad there, could be just Chinese developers hit by this.

Is this why it hit?

https://m.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/co...ild_for_xcode/

If you have a team of developers, a Hackintosh cuts the major cost involved.

That sounds like you're trying to say the "vast majority of malware will be specially written specially for iOS" which obviously a complete lie.

Android has had more malware written for it in the last 5 years than any other platform including Windows and iOS. iOS has the least malware when compared to ALL other platforms.

I'm sure you weren't just trolling with that comment though.

One in every ten Android Apps infected with Malware this translates to 1 in every ten android devices infected with undetectable malware. Scarey stuff.

I'm talking about real apps being malware, not infected apps containing malware.
99% + malware comes external from the Play Store, l guess it is likewise it is with the IOS Store.

But if it is coming from a Hackintosh, like I posted later, if the Hackintosh is popular for genuine coders then Apple has a Cydia like problem, jailbroken devices more being plagued by stolen software similarly containing malware.

However, I dont even know if Hackintosh comes into the equation, it just sounds a plausible thought.

All OS's are vulnerable in some way or other. This development has shown that.

Malware writers will always go for the most popular and most used OS. Hence why windows had far more than osx. The same applies here.

Mercury Browser got removed from my device and the App Store earlier this year.

I paid for it too, about 1.99 so I'm not impressed as no refund was offered.

Did you get notified that it had been removed? Seems strange that you were not offered a refund.

Yes, I got a pop up box saying Mercury Browser is no longer available for my device when I opened the app and then it deleted itself.

Sounds to me by reading a few news stories that it's the normal App Store and quite a few major apps?

Not exactly the same thing as it says in the article it's from third party app stores and not the Google Play Store.

Same thing again as they are talking about 3rd party app stores and not the Google Play Store.

If you stick to the Play Store your likely to be safe (unless it gets hacked like they have done Apples App Store like they have done).

Any app that was built with this modified XCode SW and then uploaded to App Store contains the malware.
