We established last season that zombies can be killed en masse by high pressure hoses like which were probably on sale at, say, a John Deere Tractor showroom..

Looks like Rick and Morgan may be too far apart now. I reckon Morgan would be a better fit to manage civilian life in Alexandria, Rick should be handling external "military" operations.

After spending a season being closed off to people, Enid decided to hold hands with Carl. Since she's apparently just decided to live again, I'd say her death is imminent.

Eugene's hair fixation continues to amuse me....

Carol to Morgan, after he clocked her game: "You're the sweetest....." He better watch himself, no stick is going to stop Carol.

Why did Rick expect such a complicated plan to succeed with that bunch of untrained Alexandria no-hopers? They panicked in the face of few walkers, nevermind thousands. Really? The reason for it's failure may, or may not be their fault, but still....

Thoroughly entertaining.”

BIB - I think Morgan knows all about Carol though and that she can be deadly. He seems very good at reading people and their actions.

I loved the first episode, the b&w flashbacks as an homage to the comics and the fact that when Sasha and Abraham were luring the zombies away with the car they had the hazard warning lights on too even though the road was pretty empty!

My plan would have been to use the zombies where they were in the quarry as target practice for the Alexandrians. If the truck had not moved to let them out they could have had plenty targets.

Loved the cliffhanger and how people are going to react to Rick now that his plan has gone awry due to the siren being sounded. I can't think that Rick's posse plus the Alexandrians who have no fighting experience are going to manage to take on all of that horde.

The episode was okay but I'm not a fan of the flash back / flash forward episodes, they do my head in, I would much rather they show it straight through from the beginning to the end.

I thought it was a really good opening episode. Rick trying to prove to everyone that he is right, with a billion walkers thrown in for good effect.

I'm going to assume the "That's not the only reason" "No, it isn't" exchange between Maggie and Glenn was hinting at...

Spoiler
her pregnancy?

Star of the show goes to Glenn: "I'm supposed to be delivering pizza, man."

Same here.........I hate the trend in US Drama to constantly jump around in time. They seem to think it makes the show 'arty'

But if they're going to do it then having flashbacks in B&W is a good compromise as you're not constantly having to think what time zone they're in

Re the bit in spoilers...didnt we already know about that from the end of last season?

I liked the episode, it sets up the new series and fresh challenges well. Loving Eugene at the minute.

I do understand why they have to deal with the walkers. Rather deal with them in a controlled manner when they are ready than have the lot spill out uncontrolled. It would have worked if it hadnt been for that pesky horn.

I thought it was great, though a little too long for me.

I love how they're slowly building tension between Morgan and Rick

Just a thought, and I can't recall the geography of the cavern but couldn't they have rigged up a barrier to herd the zombies off to one side and over the edge and back into the bottom bit again, so they came full-circle (so to speak), then just sit back as they watch them go round and round and round, slowly wearing down their broken limbs until our guys can disbatch them all with ease ?

I've seen walkers walk into barbed wire, wooden stakes etc. If a walker came to a cliff edge would it turn back?

Did anyone see Rosita in this episode? I don't remember seeing her in the present, and wondered if it was her in the bag Abe was carrying.

Loved the exchange between Morgan and Michonne about the energy bar, although I'm sure that she was actually eating his crackers in Clear not some powerbar.

As for the rest, I'll have to watch again, disliked the B&W.

I wasn't enthralled by that episode. One thing each of the series of TWD has had is a stunning opening episode each time and this one just didn't grab me. Hopefully the fallout from the siren going off will lead to more exciting times ahead.

It's good that the show is back. I liked the B&W bits - thought it was a nod to the original George A Romero film, but as a nod to the comics - that's cool too. I wonder who it is who has set the horn off - obviously someone has been watching their progress - maybe's The Wolves?

Rewatched some of the first series recently. Was surprised at how motivated the walkers were back then, climbing a fence to catch Rick and Glenn, turning door knobs, climbing a ladder. They appear to have devolved somewhat since then, so yeah falling off a cliff edge rather than stopping seems to be about right.

It did seem a bit like a tag on to season 5 rather than a premiere, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it all, it was great seeing them again. The only problem I had with the black and white is that I like the tinted grainy colour that WD usually has and the colour segments in this episode seemed too bright.

As to walkers being reused , there's one female who I'm sure has been there since the very beginning

How much is a can of pressurised water big enough to take out a thousand zombies?
They could probably buy a hose but what they gonna connect it to?

And when they start shooting at a couple of the walkers, the other 998 start walking enmasse towards the gunfire?

Possibly but how were they supposed to walk into the quarry and work around the walkers?

The zs went from the bottom of the quary, up the hill, to the funnel point of the trucks. If our guys found a way of directing the uphillers off the cliff, back down into the quarry then wouldn't the zs continue working their way up the hill and off the cliff, then back up the hill again. . And as for zs turning away from a cliff edge - my idea would have the zs behind them pushing the front ones off etc etc.

Whilst I understood they needed to deal with the horde in the quarry, when I realised the plan was to lead the horde out and onto the road I just knew it was going to go wrong. Surely you'd deal with them whilst contained asap, rather than letting them all out? In the end their hand was forced by the truck slipping off the edge of the quarry.

We did laugh when Rick came out the house and had all the sterile strips over his face! And Glenn's quip about being a pizza delivery boy was classic!

BIB - Was meaning that they shoot them from where Rick and Morgan first saw the horde and the other zombies fell when chasing the boy. So that they had a height and distance advantage.

That presumes they have enough ammo to kill the thousands that were in the quarry though and all the shooting would attract other walkers that aren't in the quarry towards the cliff top where they are shooting from.

What got me though, was the stupidity. They had an army of zombies trapped, and it's their genius idea to let them out and then lead them out of the area rather than dealing with them.

Step #1: Reinforce the blockade.
Step #2: Build Bombs

Between the people of Alexandria, Daryl's crossbow and a various supplies, I find it hard to imagine that a few explosives couldn't have been created to deal with that army, heck, our survivors could have even dug some holes between the current blockage and Alexandria for the undead to fall into - then set them ablaze.

The whole concept of lets lead them all 20-30 miles out so that they're safe is madness. Especially when it wouldn't take too much noise to have them all turn around again.

And that alarm? My money's on the kid.”

i thought this straight away. they are all in the quarry so take a couple of big trucks up there to re enforce the truck blockade and then torch all the zombies together. completley stupid plan by rick ..why does he have to get people killed with crazy complicated schemes. it took a whole episode and it was boring in the end. i wanted to see more of alexandria and the aftermath of the final episode last season.
a disappointing start

They would still have to go into the quarry to steer them

This was the safest way to deal with them though, they had to deal with them quickly as the blockade in place wasnt gonna hold forever (obviously it gave way after saying this) as they said in the episode that some seem to have missed, bombs would create too much noise that would attract even more walkers or other groups.

Watching the episode, it seems not - we do see several of them walking over the edge (when the dead man's son - can't remember his name - was being followed by them and then saved by Rick).

I was really hoping Morgan's like would be 'Did you have trouble shaving Rick?'

Exactly, we know that noise attracts them, a big booming bomb would do the same job that the alarm at Alexandria has had.

Personally I loved the episode, the length, the B&W, new characters , old characters, geez this show keeps me on the edge of my seat. I never want it to end

I'm confused that people dislike even this episode, maybe you need to stop watching because I think this show gets better and better

Cant wait for next weeks episode!

I'm with you, Oz. I can't understand it either. Not every episode is going to be perfect and, perhaps, there is some building up in people's heads about the show during it's absence and thinking that every episode should be bigger and better than the next, but I am rarely disappointed in an episode. I'm always glad it's on and excited to see the next episode.
