I think he should've helped the military to clear the hospital.

Rick's door was unlocked and walkers at that time still knew how to use door handles. The military cleared the hospital and saved Rick. The military contained the walkers behind barred and chained doors and laid out the dead in neat rows. Shane had already run off,
playing at happy families.....

I can see perfectly well TYVM. It doesn't matter if attraction exists IMO, they've done nothing. There is, so far, no "emotional investment" there. Rick was hostile to a wife beater because he was a wife beater, not because he was
her husband.

“Rick lies too. Sometimes it's simpler. (Did he actually lie? Or did he merely say that Otis died trying to do the right thing and not give details beyond that? Telling them that Otis was an idiot who died from stupidity would not have gone down well.)”
It's definitely "simpler" to lie, if you've just murdered someone. Telling people that Otis was an "idiot" and "stupid" would be just more lies.

“By this time he'd realised he wasn't going to get her. This was after he made a pass at her (what you call attempted rape) and got rejected. He stayed because he was needed by the group, especially Carl who would be dead without him.”
Decent men know to stop before the woman has to draw blood.

“No. Shane's instinct was to sacrifice himself to save Otis (and Carl). He offered to do that. You keep pretending that didn't happen, but it did.”
Only if you think Shane was asking Otis to shoot him. Otherwise his "offer" meant nothing.

“In the end it came down to either Otis dies, or Otis, Shane and Carl all died. Shane made the right choice. It really bothers me that people don't understand this basic arithmetic.”
Not necessarily.

“Just as Otis was going to die anyway.”
That is merely your opinion.

Shane is definitely misunderstood in some quarters, for sure. But yes, it's not worth debating anymore.
