I would agree with all of the above except to say (as I've mentioned on a couple of threads now) that Austin was an aggressive, deceitful person on The A List, an American reality programme back in 2011. That was two years before he lost his brother and long before his mother was imprisoned for theft.
Interesting, I don't personally buy the tears anyway, more like a self-pitying temper tantrum because people stood up to him which shocked him. I don't think he is used to that somehow. He also doesn't give a crap about what anyone else has been through and their struggles, but everyone should understand his pain and excuse his outbursts. Give me a break. He should take his own advice he dismissively gave Chloe, if he can't hack it, leave.

It did seem like a temper tantrum at the time. It melted my heart especially after he left the diary room. But also it did remind me of a small child who can't get his way and hops up and down shouting 'it's not fair'. I am in a quandary over this one.

Agree with this completely.

We've had 3 Americans in there who have no self awareness, feel totally entitled and that everyone should answer to them, who plot and scheme, back bite and treat everything as a competition where there are no rules unless it happens to affect them. Janice may well be similar and Scoop my jury is out on. What kind of *cough* 'culture' are they growing up in and being a part of?

I'm wondering why some are displaying so much empathy for Austin when there wasn't any for Farrah...

He is just playing the game the way the Americans think it should be played.

Shocking, annoying but to some, not me, great television.

Don't believe a word he says. He is an idiot, trying hard, badly, to win.
Absolutely this! I can't understand why anyone would fall for it. But then I guess some are falling for Chloe and Stevie.... but honestly, the Brits are looking the most likeable, let's be honest.

Because they liked Austin. And Farrah was the devil incarnate. Forget the fact that the moment she went in the house, the lovely Austin started backbiting and bitching about her. To which she reacted.

What's xenophobic about saying there are 3 horrendous people in the house who happen to be American.

Speaking for myself, I did try to understand Farrah and quite liked her by the end.

But I think a reason why some people didn't empathise is simply because she didn't break down like Austin did and bare her soul. Many people feel bad seeing others in pain and thats a lovely aspect of humanity IMO. When did Farrah show us her pain? She showed us rage, sure, but youd have to dig reeeeally deep to see the pain under there. If Austin had only showed us rage last night, I guarantee he'd be getting shorter shrift.

She was, for the most part, the opposite of vulnerable. After conflict she might apologise but she never let us into her inner world, she never expressed sorrow or remorse, and apart from one admission about seeing a shrink, she didn't give viewers a whole lot of info with which they could form a rounded picture.

I realise this doesn't fit a nice binary argument that FMs are hypocrites though.

My heart went out to him. And i understand him more after tonight, having not liked him much. He's full of anger, he gets nasty with it, he lashes out, gets on a destructive roll that earns judgement from others then feels cornered and acts out even more. I could see the trajectory of that meltdown tonight. I've seen it before, in lots of people. And I totally get now why he demands loyalty and why he's so deeply wounded when he doesn't get it. His expectations of people are way too high but he's quite child-like in many ways. Poor bugger.
Good post.

As is this.

I'll add that for me, I've got a shorter tether when it comes to Farrah as I've watched her on all her TV shows over the last 6 or so years, so have had my fill of her being rude, vile and arrogant. This is the first I've seen or heard of Austin, so I'm still getting to know him (as much as I can on a show like this!) and to understand him. After 6 years of him, my opinion may change.

Austin's family certainly have had their share of tragedy. As well as trying to cope with his brother's death, I have no doubt that the guilt regarding his mother stealing money from her employer to help Austin pay his debts is also a heavy burden. Nine years is a long time in prison. We don't all cope with heartache/tragedy in the same way, some people can't cope at all. I hope Austin gets whatever help he needs and has people around him who care about him.

There were a number of times that the camera zoomed in on her during or after an argument when she looked like she could cry and had tears in her eyes. She seemed just able to hold it in, I bet she had a huge cry when she left.

I haven't called anyone a hypocrite in my post so your last sentence was quite unnecessary! There is a marked difference between the reactions of people on the board between Austin and Farrah, even though they share a similar temperament.

disagree.who rushed to comfort austin reassure him and make him a brew as he came out the diary room? davro .I find sherrie quite a cold fish personally and ultimately quite boring.on the lines of the thread did I find his tears and remorse genuine -yes.was it forgiveable-no.imagine if he called any of our mothers that.there is a line and he crossed it.if it was earlier in the show BB would have given him the bullet.

Yes, it moved me to tears too, that was real pain and I was pleased to see that bobby, Sherrie and Natasha felt for him too! I thought James was quite cold and calculating myself and really detached, I don't trust him at all!

This does not mean that I condoned Austins bad behaviour either!
I've loved Austin and been infuriated by him throughout this in equal measure, and he's given some Oscar worthy performances at times

His breakdown in the diary room however, was genuine. It didn't excuse his savage temper beforehand, but in that moment, it was heart breaking to watch.

I didn't know about his mother in prison.

She is clearly a very decent and kind lady - and she doesn't go around telling us how nice she is - she just is very considerate. I'd like to adopt her

It was mentioned on LF about Austin's medication for anxiety. Alcohol and this type of medication isn't a good combination. James said to Austin that he drank more alcohol than anyone else in the house. I thought BB had a duty of care but perhaps not.

What Austin has done is being utterly self-destructive. He's too old for behaving like a child at their birthday party with unrealistic expectations. He's lashed out at everyone and yet you're still forgiving his behaviour.

I guess this is why Helen Wood won last year. It's shameful.

As the originator of this thread I am fascinated by the range of responses people are demonstrating. Emotions like that are very hard to process and we often deny/reject then because of how uncomfortable they make us feel.
Calling me thick is just silly. You can say I'm wrong and in doing so you can say how Austin crying made you feel but you don't need to turn the posts onto me or denigrate my intellect (or indeed my emotional intelligence).

For me, that was heart wrenching. And real. Like a child he is full of feelings he cant easily access or articulate and they burst out of him like a childish tantrum. As someone has suggested, he identifies with Janice as his mother projecting onto her his rage and guilt he struggles to express. He probably feels abandoned by her too as she is no longer there for him. I wanted to reach out to him. I note he is drinking significant amounts of alcohol. (I think this is why he is angry with CJ because she has acknowledged her own alcoholism and he is not able to admit his own problem). I think James has a very good sense of empathy and has been very supportive and protective of him. Sharing his bed is about warmth and kindness and I feel very proud of him for his maturity.
I hope very much he isn't evicted because I fear this will reinforce his self hate.
