Is Lady Gaga the most talented pop star around today?
I’m not a big fan of Lady Gaga, but there’s no denying she's a proficient pianist and has a strong voice. She has proven that she can perform very well when it’s just her and the piano. Her performances at the Grammy Awards and the Oscars this year were impressive. I doubt Madonna, Britney Spears and Katy Perry could do anything like that. Madonna’s performance at the Oscars in 1991 and 1997 seem amateur in comparison. In fact, Lady Gaga would probably own Madonna if the two of them were on stage with instruments and nothing else, that’s the difference between a singer and musician being naturally gifted and talented and a performer who is good at dancing and using a backing track for two hours.
How would you rank Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Pink, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Madonna and Adele? I’m talking in terms of vocal and musical talent, not success. Lady Gaga – For reasons I’ve stated above. Adele – A strong singer. Pink – Another strong vocalist. Miley Cyrus - Plays the guitar now and again, but her voice is more powerful than Taylor's. Taylor Swift – She can play the guitar reasonably well, but her voice, while pleasant, is bland and unassuming. Rihanna – I was going to place her between Madonna and Katy Perry, but I think her voice has a little more power than Madonna's. Madonna – She can play a few chords on the guitar on stage for a few minutes, but she isn’t proficient enough to play it on her albums, weak, unspectacular voice and often sounds out of breath and struggling to hit notes. Katy Perry – Plays the guitar now and again, but her voice isn’t particularly strong. Britney Spears – Has played the piano on stage during Everytime, but it’s not a particularly difficult song to play, weak vocals. |

Lady Gaga - the singer who's only hits you hear on radio are Just Dance and Paparazzi?

In no particular order whatsoever:
Madonna has co-written a lot of good songs though, albeit not recently. I think that has been her strength, along with dancing/putting on a show. Her voice may not be strong, but it is recognisable and pleasant. Songs like Miles Away and Till Death Do Us Part have real depth. It's a pity most of her new stuff is tripe. She has been very influential, whatever you think of her. Lady Gaga had one good album and that's it. Her stuff since then has been generic pap. It doesn't matter if you've got a good voice if most of your songs are crap - just look at Christina. Judas was an unholy mess. Her OTT persona is too "try hard". Taylor can't sing live and Rihanna's voice is weak. I don't think Rihanna writes any of her own stuff, so she's utterly replaceable. On top of that, her attitude stinks to high heaven. Taylor has bad relationships with everyone, yet none of it is ever her fault. Going by her songs, I think she has a personality disorder. Adele - very good singer and her songs have some depth. Pink - A number of good songs and strong voice. Does come across like a bit of a rebellious teenager at times, which seems silly at her age. I like her though. |

Is this not a question essentially about musicianship?
How many of these artists has done an unplugged session (for MTV) or appeared on Later....with Jools Holland? That would be a good guide, would it not? |

It seems to be quite widely agreed that Miley Cyrus's latest album (& Her Dead Petz) is very good indeed, and arguably more interesting than Lady Gaga's recent work, but how much of that is down to her and how much is down to the Flaming Lips is open to question.

Lady GaGa has had one great album. Her first tour was great, it looked likely that she would become an interesting artist and one to watch.
Since then she's become a bore. Substandard music, lacklustre performances and an air of pretension wich is totally unattractive. She will never again be as successful as her debut. |

So basically, she plays a bit of piano? Not exactly the highest standards we are imposing here.

I do agree with Lady Gaga being talented, I saw her live a couple of years ago at Twickenham and it was incredible - I wasn't a huge fan before this but her live vocal performances are amazing.
I would have to say vocally Beyonce needs to be on your list. Her live performances have so much energy and her singing doesn't suffer from the dancing etc. I also love Ellie Goulding- I believe she plays the guitar well and writes her own music. Watch her love lounge cover of "All I want" - gives me goosebumps every time. Other strong vocalists - Sia, Florence Welsh, Alicia Keys |

Talented Popstar?
Surely the criteria is: - Great pop vocalist live or recorded or both - Great Songwriter - Great performer - Popular albums and singles - Great influence socially and culturally - influence on other artists - Critical acclaim for songs, performances or albums - Ability to play an instrument - Great Producer - Great Buzzworthy/hype promotion machine - Great presence/star quality |

Nah, Lady Gaga is mostly all about the image and extravaganza - even though she is talented, she wastes it all to being popular and talked about.
What about Sara Bareilles for example? I would actually dare and put her above Adele. Her voice is ALWAYS on point, the range is insane and she writes all of her songs on her own, she rarely has co-writers. And she also plays guitar and piano. Just recently, she wrote music and lyrics for the musical Waitress that has positive reviews. |

No. I think Beyonce ousts her just slightly but after Beyonce it's definitely Lady Gaga.

Yes I know I am extremely bias, but I find it hard to believe that people on this forum are dismissing this so quickly. The excuse of 'one good album' is irrelevant as it was stating initially that success is not important.
Gaga has an amazing voice, she can write great songs, she can dance well, she can act, she can play the piano, she is creative - basically she can do anything and everything to a high standard so anyone saying that she isn't talented is deluded. The only other person who can do all of the above, like Gaga, imo is Beyonce, however I would favour Gaga based on the fact that B has relied on JZ quite a bit to launch her career and Gaga is undeniably more grounded and down to earth than B. Imo Beyonce knows she's good and has let it go to her head but each to their own. So in summary, yes imho Gaga is the most talented artist in the industry. The only other person who comes close is Beyonce. I can't see how anyone can disagree with a valid argument. Valid being key. |

If she can do all these things to such a high standard, how come she hasn't for five years? Is it all just a case of her disappearing up her own arse?
Personally, I love ARTPOP and the movement she pushed (which Tidal also did). The thing with Gaga is that she set the bar so high for herself with The Fame and that people believe everything after is bad when in fact it is still great but dwarfed by the fame. If someone like Sara Bareiles (or however you spell it) had the sales of ARTPOP in 2013 then it would be hailed as a massive success. Still no valid point against my original post. |

it wouldn't be fair to judge one artist for 4 or 5 years against 1 year or giant 20 years or more ...surely...we need balanced criteria ...and their peak should be a factor for their voice and musicianship?
talent is more than vocal and playing an instrument ... longevity itself is a talent influence culturally, socially and musically is a talent talent is a broad word ... if you are saying who is the best popstar in their prime vocally and for their musicianship as songwriter, and/or live player .... that is slightly different? and perhaps quite marginalised ....as a popstar has to have plethora of talents to be held in such regard as a popstar legend ... |
