Do you remember Tim from BB3? Dyed his hair black and would hide under his duvet, making sure to shave any stray ginger stragglers.

Regardless of hairs we can't see, he must have to dye it almost daily. Dark roots showing through light hair (to a certain point) looks okay and textured, while lighter roots showing through dark hair looks weird, or sometimes looks like it's thinning. I've never seen roots on him so he must do it pretty regularly, and his beard would be more noticeable when it grew out.
